With baby number three on the way, Mark Wahlberg is committed to making his family life as successful as his film career – and that includes marrying longtime girlfriend Rhea Durham.

"We continue to grow in our relationship," Wahlberg told PEOPLE on Thursday at San Diego's Comic-Con International, where he was promoting his upcoming film Max Payne. "I think we have a much better chance at succeeding and staying together."

The 37-year-old actor and longtime girlfriend Durham, 30, plan to have a formal wedding next summer after their baby is born.

Mark Wahlberg and his longtime girlfriend Rhea Durham, 29, who are expecting their third child together in September, are planning to tie the knot in summer of 2009.

"She wants to wait until after the baby. We've been very fortunate. We've waited and worked hard to really strengthen our relationship. We want it right," Wahlberg, 37, who stars in the new thriller The Happening, tells PEOPLE at the IZOD-sponsored screening in Boston to benefit The Mark Wahlberg Youth Foundation. "We're ready. I'm ready. She's been ready, but I think you know, we both come from broken homes and we want to succeed."

And the 37-year-old actor and his longtime girlfriend Rhea Durham, 29, may not stop there.

"When the kids are good, we want eight or nine," Wahlberg said Monday in L.A. while promoting his new film, The Happening. "When they're bad, we [want] to stop at three."

The couple also have a daughter, Ella, 4, and a son Michael, 2, and Wahlberg (who didn't disclose Durham's due date) says having a full house is "awesome."

"Hectic at times," he admits. "But a lot of fun."

Mark Wahlberg was so determined to score the lead role in the biopic Invincible that he lied to get it. "I said I played college football – obviously, I'd never even gone to college, never played high-school football," he says. But the 35-year-old actor rose to the challenge to portray Vince Papale, a regular guy who tried out for the Philadelphia Eagles in the 1970s and, incredibly, made the team. PEOPLE caught up with Wahlberg about fatherhood (he has two kids with model girlfriend Rhea Durham – daughter Ella Rae, who turns 3 on Sept. 2, and 5-month-old son Michael) and football injuries.
