Friends React to Oprah Winfrey's Decision to End Show

Originally posted 11/20/2009 08:00AM

As the realization sinks in that, after a quarter of a century, Oprah Winfrey will be ending her syndicated talk show Sept. 9, 2011 – a decision she intends to explain on her program Friday – rivals, admirers and industry analysts are chiming in with their reactions.

As with most things Oprah, there's admiration mixed with a sense of awe.

Martha Stewart, attending Diddy's 40th birthday bash at New York's Plaza Hotel Thursday night (the news about Winfrey had broken late that afternoon), pointed out that Oprah was not retiring.

"She'll do another show," said the domestic diva, 68. "She's evolving. She's fabulous."

Martha Stewart's Prison Stay Cost Her $1 Billion

Oh, the things she could have done.

Martha Stewart is finally putting a figure to the amount she lost when she was sent on charges lying to authorities, and it's a doozey.

"Probably more than a billion dollars, of course," she says matter-of-factly during an interview with Nightline to air Thursday night.

But as much as it pained her to lose those riches, it was humanity that really suffered, she says.

Martha Stewart Talks Prison and Rap Music to Rachael Ray

What do you get when you bring domestic doyenne Martha Stewart and queen of quick meals Rachael Ray together? A lot of dishy conversation – but no actual food.

At least that's what happened when Stewart made her first ever appearance on the Rachael Ray Show for an episode airing Thursday. The two TV chefs stayed out of the kitchen during the hour-long taping on Nov. 10, and instead sat down for a revealing chat about food, family and fame.

"I would have been hugely nervous had we gone into the kitchen together," Ray told PEOPLE after the taping. "I didn't know what to expect so I was nervous with anticipation."

Martha Stewart 'Very, Very Sorry' About Jessica Simpson's Dog Loss

Originally posted 09/25/2009 08:40AM

Martha Stewart made a public apology to Jessica Simpson Thursday over the loss of the singer's beloved dog, Daisy.

"I said that she should have been watching her dog more closely, but I feel very, very sorry for anybody that loses a pet," the master homemaker said on The Martha Stewart Show.

Earlier this month, Stewart seemed to chastise Simpson for not looking out for her dog more carefully after Daisy was snatched by a coyote in front of Simpson's eyes. But now Stewart has turned more sympathetic.

"Jessica, I hope you find your pet, but if you don't, I'm really sorry that you lost one," she added.

Martha Stewart's Dog Killed in Explosion

Originally posted 03/09/2009 10:35AM

Martha Stewart is mourning the loss of her dog Ghenghis Khan who died in an explosion at a Pennsylvania kennel. The blast happened on Friday when kennel worker Timothy Kleinhagen was filling a propane tank at the facility that cared for many show dogs and was co-owned by Karen Tracy.

Kleinhagen reportedly remained in critical condition on Saturday, and Tracy called him "a hero" for trying to rescue many dogs even after suffering severe burns in the blaze. Sixteen dogs died as a result of the explosion, the Morning Call reported. Thirteen were being treated at nearby hospitals, many with first, second and third degree burns.

Stewart, who announced that she adopted Ghenghis Khan in December, posted updates on Twitter and blogged about the horrific incident Sunday on her blog in a posting titled, “A terrible event.”

Carol Burnett Teaches Tarzan Yell to Meredith & Martha

Originally posted 03/12/2008 03:50PM

It's not exactly up there with getting to be a Rockette on the great stage of Radio City Music Hall, but Today show host Meredith Vieira saw another dream come true Wednesday morning when she got "living legend" – Vieira's very words – Carol Burnett to teach her the comedian's trademark Tarzan yell.

"It's a yodel," the star, 74, promoting her new movie Dr. Seuss' Horton Hears a Who, explained, "so you go from ... the 'chest voice' to the 'head voice.' "

Vieira, 54, scored perhaps a 7 for her efforts. Then the crowd outside the studio in Rockefeller Plaza tried their pipes. They sounded like a jungle full of Tarzans.

Last to attempt to make like the famous (vine)-swinger? Martha Stewart, 66, who ended up sounding like a frog croaking. Advised Burnett: Stick to the cooking.

Martha Stewart describes her late mother, Martha Kostyra, as "a strong, vibrant, funny, very intelligent woman" in a heartfelt editorial tribute in the February issue of Martha Stewart Living.

Known as "Big Martha," the matriarch of the Kostyra clan passed away at age 93 on Nov. 16 after suffering a stroke 12 days prior.

"It was for me, as well as for my siblings, a very difficult 12 days," writes Stewart. "She remained acutely cognizant of the fact that she was in a hospital bed, weak and tired and ready to make her final journey."

Martha Stewart Still Stewing Over Donald Trump

Talk about slow cooking – Martha Stewart is still mad at Donald Trump.

The two moguls first clashed in late 2005, when Stewart's Apprentice spin-off debuted shortly after Trump's show, starting a war of words.

More than two years later, Stewart's still stewing.

"Donald said some things in all the hastiness that were unforgivable and I don't have time for people like that," she said at the New York Times Art & Leisure Week Forum on Friday.
