Matthew Fox stayed quiet last year following allegations that he hit a woman partly because it was a criminal case, but also because he didn't want to give the claims any legitimacy by addressing them.
"When you're involved in a criminal and a civil case, you're advised not to speak about these things, because they're trying to find the truth and depose witnesses," the former Lost actor, 46, says in an interview airing Wednesday on The Ellen DeGeneres Show.
"I also find that it's just a little bit undignified to come out and respond to people who make allegations that are so outlandish, with just one person saying, 'You did this,' and you come back and say, 'No, I didn't.' "

After two run-ins with the law in 14 months, Matthew Fox wants to set the record straight. Yes, he drove drunk. No, he didn't hit a woman.
"It's been a long, trying year of sitting on my hands on a lot of negative s--- said about me, when they're the furthest things from who I am," the former Lost actor tells Men's Fitness.
"In the 46 years I've been breathing on this planet, I have never hit a woman before. Never have, never will," he says. "Out of all the negative s---, the only thing that's true is that I was arrested for a DUI."

Nearly two months after his arrest for driving under the influence, Matthew Fox was back in jail – to have his mug shot taken.
At the time of his arrest May 4, the camera at the Deschutes County Adult Jail in Bend, Ore., was broken, TMZ.com reports. Under the judge's order, the Lost alum returned to take the photo June 29.
After he was charged with two misdemeanors – driving under the influence and driving without a license – Fox, 45, pleaded no contest on June 1 to one count of driving under the influence of intoxicants. If he successfully completes a court diversion program within a year, Fox will avoid jail time.

Matthew Fox will avoid jail time in his Oregon DUI case if he successfully completes a court diversion program.
The Lost star, 45, pleaded no contest on June 1 to one count of driving under the influence of intoxicants. The actor wasn't required to appear before Circuit Judge Roger de Hoog in Bend, Ore., and the plea was entered by his attorney.
"He has to go to an evaluator for alcohol [abuse] and complete any recommended treatment program," Deputy District Attorney Cliff Lu tells PEOPLE.
If Fox completes the terms of a diversion program within a year, the DUI charge "is certain to be dismissed," says Lu.
