Jake Gyllenhaal is the latest actor to drop major weight for a movie, but he says it's really not that different from prepping for any role.
"I think [I've lost] probably a little over 20 pounds, something like that," the actor, 32, told PEOPLE Monday on the red carpet at the Hollywood Film Awards, where he looked noticeably thinner as he was honored for his role in Prisoners.
While he may look different, his approach hasn't changed as he prepares for Nightcrawler, Gyllenhaal said.

In Tinseltown's first major presentation leading up to the 2014 Oscars, some of the industry's biggest stars turned out for Monday night's Hollywood Film Awards.
The non-televised show, which PEOPLE live streamed from the red carpet at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, brought on a lot of laughter, an occasional tear – and a particularly eyebrow-raising presenter's speech.

Matthew McConaughey has bulked up for roles in films like Magic Mike, but when he had to lose weight for a project, he called in the expert – Tom Hanks.
"I actually called Tom and had a great conversation with him about what he learned about losing weight for Philadelphia and Cast Away," McConaughey told PEOPLE at the Dallas Buyers Club junket in Beverly Hills on Saturday. "And I consulted a nutritionist about the best way to do this."
The actor was 185 lbs. when he began losing weight for his role as an HIV-positive man dealing with his diagnosis. McConaughey thought he would stop at 145 lbs.

Jennifer Garner made a departure from typical Hollywood moviemaking for her role as Dr. Eve Saks in Dallas Buyers Club – her wardrobe came from Goodwill and she went makeup-free.
"I am not someone who is driven by vanity. Even in ways that I should be. I'm not very good at the whole vanity thing," Garner, 41, told PEOPLE at a press day for the movie at the Four Seasons hotel in Los Angeles Monday.
"But I did love that [director] Jean-Marc Vallée came to me and said, 'I don't want you to look pretty.' He almost didn't give me the job because he just assumed . . . and I said, 'I don't care. Never touch my face with makeup. I don't care.' And he didn't. I never sat in the makeup chair."

It's the role Matthew McConaughey dropped a shocking 47 lbs. to play.
And in the trailer for Dallas Buyers Club, you can see why he took the part so seriously. The film tells the story of Ron Woodroof, a heterosexual Texas electrician diagnosed with HIV in the 1980s, who tracked down and smuggled non-FDA-approved drugs into the U.S. to try to save his life.
Ultimately, Woodroff creates a club to sell the drugs to others with the AIDS virus – mostly gay men, the very people he won't associate with at the start of the film – transforming his initial disbelief over his diagnosis into meaningful action.

A burger never tasted so good.
After nearly starving himself for the upcoming movie Dallas Buyers Club, Matthew McConaughey spent 25 minutes "doozying up" his first hearty meal after shooting wrapped: a big, juicy cheeseburger.
"Extra mayo, extra jalapenos, extra dill pickles and extra ketchup!" he tells PEOPLE. "It was exactly as I wanted it."
McConaughey also wanted to look as realistic as possible, losing a whopping 47 lbs. in three months to play Ron Woodroof, a heterosexual Texas electrician diagnosed with HIV in the 1980s who tracked down and smuggled non-FDA-approved drugs into the U.S. to try to save his life.
