Having separated from his wife of four years, Israeli actress-model Naama Nativ, in February – and coping with his situation with the help of his also recently separated costar Kelly Rutherford – Gossip Girl's Matthew Settle tells PEOPLE, "I'm not enjoying it … it's tough."
Speaking at Thursday's Lilly Pulitzer-sponsored dance at New York's American Museum of Natural History, Settle, 40, said, "Until the divorce is over, it's tough to know how much time I’m going to spend with [1-year-old daughter] Aven and how the chips are going to fall. So I hope for the best."
Moving forward, "I think that we'll be good co-parents," he says. "And we'll do the best we can."

When Matthew Settle confirmed his separation from his wife, his Gossip Girl costar Kelly Rutherford could empathize, thanks to being in the middle of a divorce herself.
"He's going through his own thing, I'm going through my own thing – we kind of just support each other," she told reporters at this week's Manhattan premiere of the Discovery Channel's new nature film, Life.
And the biggest form of support? Bonding over their kids. "We both have small children that we really love, so we both just talk about them the whole time," says Rutherford, who is mom to Hermes, 3, and Helena, 8 months. "Matthew was saying his daughter, [Aven Angelica, 1], just took her first steps the other day, and he was kind of teary-eyed, it was just beautiful."

Gossip Girl star Matthew Settle and his wife, Naama Nativ have split.
"It's true and we are working on that," Settle told PEOPLE at Tuesday's G-Star Raw runway fashion show in New York. "Things happen in life and you just have to roll with it. I wish things could have been better but our focus is on our daughter."
Meanwhile, a source confirmed to PEOPLE, "They have been separated for a while now," and legal proceedings are still underway and no divorce papers between Settle, 40, and Nativ, 26, have been filed yet.
The couple, who lived together in Manhattan, where Settle was based for his role as family patriarch on Gossip Girl, welcomed a daughter, Aven Angelica Settle, last March.

Matthew Settle, the gallery owning father of Penn Badgley and Taylor Momsen's Gossip Girl characters, is "thrilled" to be an expectant father in real life.
"I'm not ready. I don't think I'll ever be ready," he told PEOPLE at Tavern on the Green Tuesday night. "But I'm thrilled."
Settle and his wife, Naama Nativ, enjoyed a dinner to benefit the Tribeca Film Institute after attending a screening of the new James Bond flick, Quantum of Solace.
"We're having a girl," added a visibly pregnant Nativ, who played Sara in You Don't Mess with the Zohan. "It's going amazingly. I love it. He's very happy, very excited."
