Originally posted 06/11/2008 10:45AM
Britney Spears and Mel Gibson had a smokin' date Tuesday night – at an exclusive Beverly Hills cigar club.
For more than two-and-a-half hours, the singer, 26, and the actor-filmmaker, 52, met in what was confirmed to PEOPLE as a more of an ongoing guidance session than a business pow-wow.
For their rendezvous at the members-only Havana Club, both showed up separately shortly before 7 p.m., well into the third game of the NBA finals between the L.A. Lakers and the Boston Celtics, which was playing at the bar. As for the smoking and watering hole itself, habitués include Ben Affleck, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sylvester Stallone and Danny DeVito.

The actor and the historical series – as well as costars Maria Doyle Kennedy and Nick Dunning and those responsible for the costumes, production design and hair and makeup – all walked away with a record seven IFTAs, more than any other in the award ceremony's 5-year history, reports Variety.
Rhys Meyers, 31, went on to mark his win with the announcement Monday that he will work as an international goodwill ambassador with the Hope Foundation. His role will be to highlight the plight of street children in India, the Irish Independent reports.

The co-screenwriter of The Passion of the Christ has sued Mel Gibson for $5 million, alleging Gibson conspired against him to deprive him of fair compensation and keep more money for himself.
In the 21-page complaint filed Monday in Los Angeles Superior Court, Benedict Fitzgerald accuses Gibson of fraud, breach of contract and unfair business practices.
"Gibson preyed monetarily on Ben, taking advantage of his unbridled enthusiasm for the project and with full cognizance of Ben's fundamental personal and spiritual beliefs," the lawsuit says.

Sheriff's Report: Mel Gibson Got Preferential Treatment
Originally posted 12/20/2007 07:00PM
Three L.A. County Sheriff's Department employees gave preferential treatment to Mel Gibson during his DUI arrest last July, a report found.
According the Office of Independent Review, employees failed to follow proper procedures during the arrest and tried to withhold details of the arrest report, which contained alleged anti-Semitic statements by Gibson.
Two sergeants and a jailer have been disciplined. One received a two-day suspension and the other two received written reprimands.
"The Office of Independent Review is doing exactly what it's supposed to do, which is monitoring the Sheriff's Department," Whitmore said, according to the Associated Press. "That makes transparency more than a buzzword, it makes it a reality."
The OIR report, released Thursday, found no violations in Paris Hilton's arrest for driving on a suspended license while on probation.
