Britney Spears and Mel Gibson had a smokin' date Tuesday night – at an exclusive Beverly Hills cigar club.

For more than two-and-a-half hours, the singer, 26, and the actor-filmmaker, 52, met in what was confirmed to PEOPLE as a more of an ongoing guidance session than a business pow-wow.

For their rendezvous at the members-only Havana Club, both showed up separately shortly before 7 p.m., well into the third game of the NBA finals between the L.A. Lakers and the Boston Celtics, which was playing at the bar. As for the smoking and watering hole itself, habitués include Ben Affleck, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sylvester Stallone and Danny DeVito.

Sheriff's Report: Mel Gibson Got Preferential Treatment

Originally posted 12/20/2007 07:00PM

Three L.A. County Sheriff's Department employees gave preferential treatment to Mel Gibson during his DUI arrest last July, a report found.

According the Office of Independent Review, employees failed to follow proper procedures during the arrest and tried to withhold details of the arrest report, which contained alleged anti-Semitic statements by Gibson.

Two sergeants and a jailer have been disciplined. One received a two-day suspension and the other two received written reprimands.

"The Office of Independent Review is doing exactly what it's supposed to do, which is monitoring the Sheriff's Department," Whitmore said, according to the Associated Press. "That makes transparency more than a buzzword, it makes it a reality."

The OIR report, released Thursday, found no violations in Paris Hilton's arrest for driving on a suspended license while on probation.
