Melissa Etheridge to California: 'You Can Forget My Taxes'

Originally posted 11/06/2008 05:05PM

No same-sex marriage, no more tax dollars from Melissa Etheridge.

That's the defiant stand taken by the 44-year-old singer in a new blog post on The Daily Beast following the passage of California's Proposition 8.

Etheridge declares that if she's not "allowed the same right [to marry] under the state constitution as any other citizen. ... I am taking that to mean I do not have to pay my state taxes, because I am not a full citizen."

"Okay," she continues. "There is a lot I can do with the extra half a million dollars that I will be keeping instead of handing it over to the state of California."

Etheridge opposed the ballot measure along with Brad Pitt, Mary J. Blige, Ellen DeGeneres, and Sacha Baron Cohen.

Melissa Etheridge has a message about California's Proposition 8, which would ban same sex marriage: It's lame!

But those aren't her words – that's how the singer's 9-year-old son, Beckett, described it.

"He, being 9 years old and very proud of his reading skills, read 'Changes California Constitution to eliminate right of same sex couples to marry," wrote Etheridge in her blog on The Daily Beast. "He looked at me, very matter-of-factly and said, 'Wow, that's lame.' "

While uncharacteristically mum about its choice for president, Hollywood's been highly vocal about another political issue – giving a loud "No" to Proposition 8.

And if those sentiments weren't clear enough, the concert by Melissa Etheridge and Mary J. Blige Tuesday night to fight Prop 8 raised $3.9 million.

The $1,000-a-head event was intended to help close the gap between the No on Prop 8 supporters, who have raised about $25 million, and the Yes on Prop 8 boosters, who have $27 million in their coffers, reports Variety.

Melissa Etheridge plans to legally tie the knot with her longtime partner, Tammy Lynn Michaels.

But the couple, whose twins turn 2 this month, are still in pre-planning stages. "We're trying to find the right time now actually to go down and do it – [that] is where we're at," Etheridge said Wednesday, according to Extra.

When the pair first exchanged vows five years ago in Malibu, same-sex marriages weren't legally recognized in California. (Michaels, however, has changed her last name to Etheridge.) Earlier this year, California's Supreme Court ruled to allow gay marriage under the state's constitution.

Just two days after performing a medley of songs at the Democratic National Convention, Melissa Etheridge still had politics on her mind during a concert in Los Angeles Friday night.

"When I was there [at the DNC], I felt a great sense of hope," she told the crowd at the Greek Theatre. "I felt a great sense of, finally, us coming together because it was people of all kinds there ... I feel a huge change coming. I feel it."
