Dan Stevens of Downton Abbey Goes Brunette and Scruffy

Could Dan Stevens be coming back to Downton Abbey – as Matthew Crawley's thinner, darker, scruffier twin?

How else to explain the actor's dramatic transformation from blond and aristocratically well fed to trim and brunette with stubble? (Unless of course it's for another role).

Stevens, 30, last seen crashing to his death on Downton's shocking finale, reemerged over the weekend at the 2012 GLAAD Media Awards in New York with his new look (accentuated by a Calvin Klein Collection suit).

And while Michelle Dockery's Lady Mary is going to have struggle without her exceedingly earnest baby daddy next season, Stevens is taking on new acting challenges, shooting the thriller A Walk Among the Tombstones with Liam Neeson.

Downton Abbey's Dramatic Plot Turn: What Caused It?

How seriously do TV viewers take what happens to the Crawleys and those in their sphere on Downton Abbey?

So seriously that, as the series' creator and writer Julian Fellowes recently admitted to PEOPLE, he even gets yelled at "a bit" by members of the public when something they dislike takes place on the show.

"And they know it all," the Oscar- and Emmy-winner, 63, said about the public's reaction. "They have opinions that are better than mine."

SPOILER ALERT: Details of Sunday's broadcast are about to be revealed.

On the screen, Downton Abbey's downstairs house staff are decidedly unglamorous and dressed to reflect their life's station. But at the SAG Awards Sunday night, where they won for best TV cast, the actors said they were thrilled to be made up and presenting themselves as red-carpet ready.

"It's bliss. It really is nice to have more than 10 minutes spent on your face," said actress Phyllis Logan, who plays stoic Mrs. Hughes, the head maid.

Added Amy Nuttall, who plays Ethel, the housemaid turned prostitute: We all get costume and hair and makeup envy of the upstairs girls. They all look immaculate and fresh, and we're all made to look tired."

It looks like Lady Mary will finally make a fetching and stylish bride.

New photos posted by EW.com show Mary in her wedding gown as she is set to marry distant cousin – and heir to the family's fortune – Matthew Crawley (Dan Stevens) in the third season of Downton Abbey, which returns to American television on Sunday night (9 p.m. ET) on PBS.

The show's costume designer, Caroline McCall, went all out for the bride's period wedding ensemble, making it what EW says is the show's most expensive outfit to date. A slam dunk for Twilight!

Robert Pattinson stepped out Sunday night to attend Emmy host Jimmy Kimmel's after party at Soho House in Los Angeles.

Joined by a male friend, Pattinson was dressed casually in a baseball cap and jacket, but every girl in the room was "trying to get his attention," an onlooker tells PEOPLE.

Inside the star studded event, guests sipped on Don Julio margaritas and Bulleit Bourbon Old Fashioned cocktails and snacked on sliders from Umami Burger.

Samantha Ronson deejayed a set full of current hits and classic rock while nominees, winners and guests including Breaking Bad's Aaron Paul and Bryan Cranston, Ellen DeGeneres and Portia De Rossi, Downton Abbey's Michelle Dockery, L.A. Laker Kobe Bryant and more enjoyed the evening.

"At one point Rob approached Kobe to say hi and tell him he was a big fan," the source adds. "Kobe said the same right back to him!"

Shirley MacLaine Didn't Know What Downton Abbey Was Before She Filmed It

Originally posted 07/24/2012 01:30PM

British TV import Downton Abbey has found many fans in the States, but until recently Shirley MacLaine was not one of them.

"I walked in to my hairdresser lady's place in Malibu and they were talking about [the show]," MacLaine told reporters Saturday at the TCAs in Los Angeles. "I said, 'What do they mean?' Then I saw [the show], and I had three months of [filming] it."

The screen legend, 78, is joining the hit PBS series for its third season – playing Martha Levinson, the American mother of Elizabeth McGovern's character, Lady Grantham. The third season kicks off on PBS January 2013.

"I didn't know anything about Martha Levinson, but my hairdresser did," MacLaine said about her character, who was referenced to but never seen in the first two seasons. "Along with the great acting and writing that is why I [took the part] – to see if my hairdresser was right!"
