In recent months, the Duggars have found themselves mired in scandal.

The initial scandal broke in May, when a 2006 police report revealed that Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar's eldest son Josh had molested five underage girls as a teen. Two of his sisters, Jill (Duggar) Dillard and Jessa (Duggar) Seewald subsequently stepped forward as two of the victims.

Following the news, TLC officially canceled the family's reality show, 19 Kids and Counting, after nine seasons.

In his statement regarding the molestation scandal, Josh claimed his mistakes were in the past – but three months later, reports revealed that he had signed up for Ashley Madison, a website that facilitates extramarital affairs. On Aug. 20, Josh and his parents broke their silence about the scandal with a statement in which Josh called himself "the biggest hypocrite ever" and confessed to a secret pornography addiction, as well as to cheating on his wife Anna.

Six days later, the Duggars announced Josh had checked himself into rehab.

While Josh and his parents deal with the recent scandals surrounding the family (Jessa recently told PEOPLE, "You just have to keep your focus and trust God"), the rest of the vast brood has largely stayed under the radar.

Here's a quick guide to what we know about the 19 children of Jim Bob, 50, and Michelle, 48.

Jessa (Duggar) Seewald Says Sexual Abuse 'Shouldn't Be a Taboo Subject' on TLC Documentary Breaking the Silence

Jessa (Duggar) Seewald and Jill (Duggar) Dillard appeared on TLC's documentary Breaking the Silence Sunday, seeking education to address the aftermath of the abuse they faced at the hands of brother Josh Duggar more than a decade ago.

The Duggar sisters' mother Michelle also participated in the sexual abuse prevention training seminar given by Darkness to Light, one of the nation's leading organizations for abuse prevention, in the wake of confirmation this past May that Josh, now 27, molested five underage girls when he was still a teenager. (His two sisters came forward as two of the victims during a conversation with Fox News's Megyn Kelly in early June.)

"I was so glad that my girls and I were able to do this together and that we could just be a support and encouragement to each other to be able to gain more information about this important topic," said Michelle, 48.

"It's amazing to understand that there are so many people that deal with this exact same thing in their own families," said Jill, 24. "So just being educated is very good."

Jessa, 22, noted, "I feel like this should be a discussion people are having, even regularly. I think that it shouldn't be a taboo subject, that we should be bringing awareness to child sexual abuse and talking about this."

The seminar was especially meaningful for Jessa, who is expecting her first child on Nov. 1, and she said she learned "things I can do to be more aware, things I can do to set up boundaries and safeguards for my child and children, hopefully, in the future."

Long before the world ever knew about the sexual abuse that had transpired in the Duggar family household – where former 19 Kids and Counting stars Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar's eldest son Josh, as a teenager, had molested five underage girls, including his sisters Jill and Jessa – that dark secret was shared with the woman who was soon to be his wife.

"Anna did know," a source close to Josh's wife tells PEOPLE in this week's cover story. "Her whole family knew something had happened."

Josh Duggar's family announced on their website Wednesday that he is currently at "a long-term treatment center" in an effort to achieve "wholeness and recovery."

The 27-year-old checked into the facility less than a week after his bombshell revelation that he'd developed an addiction to pornography and cheated on his wife, Anna – but this isn't the first time Josh has received treatment for sexual misbehavior.

Just under a week after Josh Duggar confessed to cheating on his wife Anna and having an addiction to pornography, he has entered rehab.

"We are so thankful for the outpouring of love, care and prayers for our family during this most difficult situation with Josh," reads the statement posted to the Duggar family website Wednesday. "As parents we are so deeply grieved by our son's decisions and actions. His wrong choices have deeply hurt his precious wife and children and have negatively affected so many others. He has also brought great insult to the values and faith we hold dear."

"Yesterday Josh checked himself into a long-term treatment center," continues the statement. "For him it will be a long journey toward wholeness and recovery. We pray that in this he comes to complete repentance and sincere change. In the meantime, we will be offering our love, care and devoted support to Anna and our grandchildren as she also receives counsel and help for her own heart and future. During this time we continue to look to God – He is our rock and comfort. We ask for your continued prayers for our entire family."

Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar have always said that they are not part of the Quiverfull movement.

Although they have carefully avoided an association with any specific ideology, the Duggars' publicly held beliefs mirrors that of the conservative patriarchal movement, a catch-all term that encompasses several fundamentalist Christian sects – including the best known, Quiverfull.

The movement took off in the mid-'80s with the publication of Mary Pride's book The Way Home: Beyond Feminism, Back to Reality, in which Pride argued for a bible-based role for women.

Quiverfull takes its name from an Old Testament psalm that likens children to "arrows" and says, "Blessed is the man whose quiver is full of them."

"In the Quiverfull movement, your kids are blessings from God and they are also weapons in the culture war," says Cavan Concannon, assistant professor of religion at the University of Southern California. "Some people in the movement would say that part of having a lot of kids is an attempt to birth more conservative Christians in a world that doesn't have enough of them."

For a decade on the hit TLC show 19 Kids and Counting, Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar played the roles of "traditional" parents keeping their vast brood in line with warmth, gentle guidance and good humor.

But behind the scenes, powerful patriarch Jim Bob, 50, exerts authority over his wife and family, several close sources tell PEOPLE in this week's issue. (The Duggar family did not respond to requests for comment.)

"Jim Bob's favorite word is 'no,' " says one Duggar family source. "He's like a dictator. He once saw a guy kissing a girl before marriage and confronted him about it. And the guy said, 'Jim Bob, show me that verse in the Bible that says we can't kiss. Get out your Bible.' And Jim Bob was like, 'Uhhhh ...' because no one ever confronts Jim Bob. No one."

Adds a second source: "Jim Bob calls the shots. Always has and always will."

When Josh Duggar confessed to infidelity and a pornography addiction, he didn't just open a window into his own "double life," as he called it – he also drew more scrutiny than ever to the insular world that his family has zealously guarded for years.

"It's hurting everyone involved," a Duggar family source tells PEOPLE in this week's cover story. "Everyone feels betrayed." (The Duggar family did not respond to requests for comment.)

After Josh, 27, met his future wife Anna at a Christian conference in 2006, both sets of parents – who share a fundamentalist Christian ideology – encouraged a "courtship." At the time, the 2006 police report revealing that Josh had molested five underage girls when he was a teen was not yet public.
