Nailing triple jumps and soaring spirals while the world watched, Michelle Kwan mastered the art of keeping her emotions in check.
But as she walked down the aisle to wed White House national-security strategist Clay Pell, 31, Jan. 19 in Providence, the two-time Olympic medalist and five-time women's world figure-skating champ turned the church into her own kiss-and-cry area.
"I thought I would at least make it to the vows," a laughing Kwan, 32, told PEOPLE the day after the wedding. "It was a dream."

As Michelle Kwan – dressed in a cascading veil and a classic ivory gown – walked down the aisle on Jan. 19, the figure skater was filled with the emotion of a bride on her wedding day.
"The whole energy came from family and friends," she says of the ceremony in Providence, R.I. "People were crying. There were so many tears shed, especially from me!"
Her new husband, White House staffer and Coast Guard Lieutenant Clay Pell, was also swept up in the moment. "As she was walking into the church, I could feel her," he tells PEOPLE.

Although she was a singles figure skater throughout her successful career, Michelle Kwan did have one steadfast partner on the ice – fashion designer Vera Wang.
"I wore so many skating dresses designed by her, whole skating shows and everything," Kwan, 32, tells PEOPLE. "I have a long relationship with her."
And that made picking a wedding dress designer a fairly easy decision.

At the end of her bronze-medal finish at the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Games, nine-time U.S. national figure skating champion and five-time world champion Michelle Kwan skated to "Fields of Gold" as her Olympic swan song.
On Saturday, Jan. 19, signaling a new beginning, she incorporated that same melody into her wedding program.

Pell, a JAG and Lieutenant in the U.S. Coast Guard, was dressed in full uniform for the ceremony. Kwan, who cried while walking down the aisle with her father, Danny Kwan, wore an ivoryVera Wang gown.

Between Michelle Kwan and Sarah Hughes, they’ve won enough ice-skating medals to fill a museum. But in recent years, the skaters have set their sights on a different goal: getting a college diploma.
On Saturday, Kwan earned a bachelor's degree in international studies with a minor in political science from the University of Denver. "It feels great," the five-time world champion told PEOPLE about being a college grad. "I've always known you can only skate for so many years and then you have to rely on your education to carry you through life."
And the 28-year-old, who earned a silver at the 1998 Olympics and bronze in 2002, was recently admitted to the international affairs program at Tufts University's Fletcher School, where she expects to continue her work as an envoy for the state department. "It was difficult to travel and go to school, but it was so enjoyable visiting other countries," she said.
