In the days leading up to his death, Heath Ledger battled chronic insomnia, pneumonia and exhaustion, according to several members of Ledger's inner circle – who paint a portrait of a tortured man who struggled with personal strife and professional indecision, reports the August Vanity Fair, on sale nationally July 7.

Apparently, one of the biggest struggles in Ledger's life was his deteriorating relationship with partner Michelle Williams.

"Heath was always blaming himself [about the relationship], asking 'what did I do wrong?'" says Ledger's friend and mentor, director Terry Gilliam. He was overwhelmed by lawyers, and there were more and more of them, as if they were breeding."

Michelle Williams and Spike Jonze: PDA Alert!

Originally posted 10/16/2008 08:20AM

After months of low-key dating, it seems Michelle Williams and Spike Jonze are finally ready to take their romance public.

After attending a Cinema Society screening of their new film, Synecdoche, New York in Manhattan Wednesday night, the couple walked out of the auditorium with Jonze caressing Williams' back and wrapping his arm around her waist.

The pair held hands as they walked through the lobby, where they met up with Synecdoche costar Catherine Keener. While the two women chatted and munched on popcorn, Jonze snaked his arm around Williams' waist again.

"He couldn't seem to keep his hands off her," said an onlooker. "It was very cute."

But the sparks really started to fly later that night, when they headed to the Gramercy Hotel's rooftop club for the Mulberry-sponsored afterparty.

Originally posted 08/04/2008 01:30PM

Mary-Kate Olsen wants immunity from prosecution before she will cooperate with a federal investigation into close friend Heath Ledger's accidental overdose death, PEOPLE has confirmed.

Investigators could subpoena the 22-year-old actress but hope to work this out, a law enforcement source said Monday.

Olsen's publicist and lawyer didn't immediately comment.

Ledger, 28, was found in the bedroom of his New York apartment Jan. 22 by his housekeeper and a masseuse who had arrived for an appointment with the actor. The masseuse called Olsen before calling 911, police said.

The Drug Enforcement Administration's probe into whether Ledger was over-prescribed medicine began shortly after his death. An autopsy revealed he had prescription pain, anxiety and sleep medications in his system and the combination killed him.

Daughter Matilda Was Heath's Focus on Dark Knight Set

Originally posted 06/30/2008 08:25AM

Heath Ledger's maniacal twist on the Joker in The Dark Knight in no way resembled his true character off set – that of a proud father to his 2-year-old daughter, Matilda, his costars say.

"Because he died people want a dark story [that] he was so obsessed with the character, he was so contaminated by the Joker and he couldn't sleep and all of that stuff," said costar Gary Oldman, who plays Lt. Jim Gordon in the film, adding that wasn't the case.

"In between takes he would sit on the curbside and smoke a cigarette and laugh and talk about his daughter Matilda," added Oldman Sunday at the press day for the film. "I thought he was just a beautiful kid. I thought he was just wonderful. I had a real affection for him.
