50 Years of Stars Copying Marilyn Monroe's Sultry Birthday Song

Originally posted 05/19/2012 10:10AM

It's been 50 years since Marilyn Monroe offered a sultry musical greeting to then President John F. Kennedy on his 45th birthday. The song, "Happy Birthday, Mr. President" has become iconic – parodied and celebrated in pop culture for the past five decades ever since it was performed on May 19, 1962.

PEOPLE.com is paying homage to the cultural moment with this roundup of equally star-studded renditions – from Mike Myers in character as Wayne Campbell to Madonna's 1993 version on SNL to the stars of Smash, vying for a role in a Marilyn-themed musical, this year.

And then there's Marilyn's version, sung at a celebration for Kennedy 10 days before his actual birthday: It was followed up with a snippet of the song "Thanks for the Memory," which she amended with lyrics written specifically for Kennedy.

Elton John Biopic: Who Should Play the Rocker?

Who can hold a candle to Elton John?

The singer's husband David Furnish recently revealed that they've started work on Rocketman, a movie about John's "very extraordinary and unique life," he tells Entertainment Weekly.

While Scottish actor James McAvoy is rumored to be the frontrunner to play Sir Elton, we've got some other ideas for the role – especially when it comes to slipping in to John's glamorous (and spangly) '70s wardrobe.

On our list: comic actor David Cross (of Arrested Development); The League's Paul Scheer, who more than bares a passing resemblance to the '70s-era star; Mike Myers, who, apart from being a comedy star, is musically-inclined; and Scottish star Ewan McGregor who's already posed as a glam rocker in Todd Haynes's Velvet Goldmine.

Not only were they this year's leading nominees, but Mike Myers and Paris Hilton were also the top "winners" at Saturday's Razzies, dis-honoring Hollywood worst achievements of the past year in an offbeat ceremony traditionally held a day before the Oscars.

Not that either attended the ceremony, but both the comic actor and the hotel heiress nabbed three Golden Raspberry Awards: Meyers, because his The Love Guru was the worst picture; he was the worst actor in it; and he co-wrote the script, selected as worst of the year.

Hilton's citations were for worst actress for The Hottie and the Nottie, worst supporting actress for Repo! The Genetic Opera and worst screen couple with either of her Hottie costars, Christine Lakin or Joel David Moore.

Mike Myers may have to dust off his mantel to make room for his awards – if he has a fireplace in his basement.

The comic actor's The Love Guru led the field at the Razzies – celebrating the worst from Hollywood last year – which were announced by Razzies founder John Wilson on Wednesday, a day before the Oscar nominations are to be revealed.

In all, Guru grabbed seven nods, including worst picture and worst performances by Myers, Jessica Alba, Verne Troyer and Oscar-winner Ben Kingsley.

Also in the running for worst picture: Disaster Movie, The Happening, In the Name of the King: A Dungeon Siege Tale, Meet the Spartans and The Hottie & the Nottie, which starred Paris Hilton, who's up for worst actress and worst screen couple (with Joel David Moore) in the film.

Mike Myers usually makes people laugh until they cry, but the comedian told PEOPLE a recent hospital performance for sick kids left him teary-eyed.

Last Thursday, the Austin Powers actor visited Rusk Institute in The Bronx with Only Make Believe, a theater charity group that puts on plays for young children in hospitals and care facilities.

"I watched kids of differing physical abilities and different backgrounds from around the world lose themselves in imagination and make believe. And I was moved to tears," says Myers. "All I can tell you is that I cried like a baby. I couldn't stop crying."

Mike Myers and Dana Carvey's Excellent Wayne's World Reunion

Originally posted 06/02/2008 08:40AM

It was "party on" again for Wayne Campbell and Garth Algar as Saturday Night Live alums Mike Myers and Dana Carvey reunited to don the mullets of their beloved Wayne's World alter egos at the MTV Movie Awards on Sunday.

"It was like I hadn't seen Dana in like ten minutes," Myers told PEOPLE. The comedian, who hosted MTV's edgy, annual celebration of popular film, last worked with Carvey in 1994 and hadn't teamed up in character with him since their 1993 sequel film Wayne's World 2, but the duo delighted the crowd with their hilarious return as the snarky local access cable TV hosts who broadcast from Wayne's basement in Aurora, Illinois.
