It was 1998 and a then unknown Mila Kunis didn't quite know what to make of the news that she would have her first real kiss on camera with Ashton Kutcher, a model turned actor whom she'd only just met.

"I was like, 'Oh, he's so cute, it's the Calvin Klein model!' " the actress told PEOPLE in 2001. "Then I was like, 'I have to kiss him?' I was so nervous and uncomfortable. I had the biggest crush on him."

Kunis, who at the time was costarring with Kutcher on That '70s Show, spritzed herself with perfume the producers gave her to help mask her nerves. "I totally perfumed myself and I was like, 'Hey, I feel better about myself,' " she said.

But the way Kutcher remembered the scene, he was the one who was sweating.

She may have been the guest of honor at Friday night's Marine Corps Ball, but fellow attendees say Mila Kunis put aside her star status to honor 236 years of military history.

The actress "was very nice and very respectful," an enlisted Marine who attended the Greenville, N.C., ball tells PEOPLE. "She gets credit and a lot of respect for coming here, not being part of this world and following through on her word."

Kunis, 28, who dazzled in black as the date of Sgt. Scott Moore, took in Marine traditions, such as a birthday cake ceremony, in which the oldest and youngest Marines slice and eat the first serving of the cake.

"She seemed to like the traditions," the Marine says. "They made her smile."
