Two photographs of Mindy McCready at the height of her career and beauty flanked a large arrangement of flowers near the altar of the Cathedral of the Incarnation in Nashville Wednesday afternoon, where more than 200 people gathered to remember the country singer who took her own life on Feb. 17 in Heber Springs, Arkansas.

In the front pew of the Catholic church, her mother Gayle Inge, brothers Josh and T.J. McCready and other family members listened to moving memories of her as a little girl and as a talented artist.

The service began with a haunting recording of McCready's "I'll See You Yesterday," the last song she recorded before her death at 37.

Nine days after troubled country singer Mindy McCready died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound at her lakefront home in Heber Springs, Ark., her family held her funeral in her hometown of Ft. Myers, Fla.

About 400 mourners filled the sanctuary of Crossroads Baptist Church. A white hearse, escorted by two police cars, delivered the singer's wooden casket to the service.

A large portrait of McCready graced the stage, and her casket was adorned with white roses. As McCready's songs were played, photos from her life were displayed on two large video screens on either side of the sanctuary.

Mindy McCready: A Country Star's Tragic Life and Death

Originally posted 02/23/2013 12:40PM

Alone and adrift, Mindy McCready seemed to have little concept of time in the blurry month following the apparent suicide of her boyfriend, songwriter David Wilson, on Jan. 13 at the lakefront home they shared in quiet Heber Springs, Ark.

"She would call you at 2 in the morning and then would call you 20 minutes later and act like she hadn't spoken to you in a week," says a friend of the long-troubled country singer, who had left a court-ordered rehab facility after just one day on Feb. 7.

She didn't talk much about her two sons, 10-month-old Zayne and 6-year-old Zander – both boys had been placed in foster care when she was admitted for treatment – because the subject brought her to tears.

Dean Cain 'Not Surprised' By Mindy McCready's Death

Originally posted 02/21/2013 08:00AM

Speaking out for the first time about his former fiancée's suicide, actor and writer-producer Dean Cain tells PEOPLE that Mindy McCready was deeply troubled even 15 years ago, but it was her manipulations and lies – not substance abuse – that sank their future together back then.

"I'm saddened to hear of her passing, but I'm not surprised," says Cain, 46, whose starring role in TV's Lois & Clark ended just as he and McCready began their relationship in 1997.

They lived together and were engaged, but things imploded after a year. From his Los Angeles home on Monday, one day after McCready fatally shot herself, Cain struggled to remember any joy to their relationship: "I can't paint too pretty a picture. She would start arguments, start drama. Things weren't allowed to be good."

Mindy McCready Faced Losing Her Children Days Before Suicide

Originally posted 02/20/2013 07:00AM

Just days before her suicide, Mindy McCready was plunged into despair after she was served with court papers proposing that her two sons be sent to live with her long-estranged mother.

"The most important thing are my babies must come home," she wrote in an email to her private investigator friend Danno Hanks, who tells PEOPLE in this week's cover story: "She lost all hope."

McCready, 37, was found dead Sunday of what authorities said Wednesday was a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head on the porch of her Heber Springs, Ark., home, the same spot where the body of her boyfriend David Wilson was discovered last month, also with a gunshot wound to the head.

What's Next for Mindy McCready's Two Young Boys?

Mindy McCready's apparent suicide on Sunday has left her two young sons in custodial limbo.

The boys – Zander, 6, and Zayne, 10 months – had been in state custody since Feb. 7, when McCready called police to ask for help in making her father and stepmother leave her home. When police arrived, McCready appeared to be intoxicated, according to a Department of Human Services report.

In a subsequent petition, the singer's father, Tim McCready, asked the court to order her to undergo mental health and substance abuse evaluation and treatment, alleging that his daughter, who had recently lost her boyfriend, "hasn't had a bath in a week ... screams about everything ... [is] very verbally abusive to Zander."

When Mindy McCready was found dead on Sunday of an apparent suicide, the country singer was not alone: Her dog, who'd been fatally shot, was by her side.

But a source close to the star tells Fox News that her decision to end the animal's life would "not have been an act of malice."

"Mindy really loved her dog," the friend said. "It would have been more of a case where she just didn't want to leave the dog alone."

On Sunday night, when news hit of Mindy McCready's apparent suicide, Lisa D'Amato got a phone call from actress Mackenzie Phillips, a cast mate on season 3 of Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew.

"We were just trying to put it all together, figure out what happened," D'Amato tells PEOPLE. "Mackenzie doesn't know either. The one thing about Mindy is that she was very much seeming to be fine and perfect on the surface, but she was battling a lot."

McCready, 37, became the third person from their season to die, joining musician Mike Starr and reality star Joey Kovar. "I'm just numb," says D'Amato. "She was such a beautiful, warm-hearted, giving, lovely woman."

Mindy McCready Made Heartbreaking Video for Suicide Prevention

Originally posted 02/19/2013 11:40AM

Just days before her apparent suicide, Mindy McCready was ready to release a suicide-prevention video dedicated to her deceased boyfriend David Wilson.

As she sings "I'll See You Yesterday," a song intended for her next album, a photo of a rural scene transitions to pictures of McCready and Wilson, followed by contact information for suicideispreventable.org. It had been intended to be used as a PSA.

"She told me that it was beautiful, it made her cry and was exactly what she wanted," says Dan "Danno" Hanks, a private investigator friend who produced the video. "I asked her if I could post it and Mindy's answer was, 'You'll know when it's right.' In hindsight she was having me produce her suicide video."
