Ten years ago, the hit TV series The O.C. made 17-year-old Mischa Barton an instant "it" girl. Within a few years, however, she was the talk of Hollywood for a different reason as her partying grew out of control.
"We thought, 'Work hard, play hard,' " she says of those years. In 2007, she was arrested for DUI. Then in 2009, shortly after her parents attempted an intervention, she blacked out under the influence of a sedative and landed in the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center psychiatric ward under an involuntary 5150 hold after she threatened to kill herself.
"It was a full-on breakdown," she tells PEOPLE, speaking about the events in detail for the first time in this week's cover story. "I was under enormous pressure."

A beaming Queen Elizabeth kicked off her Diamond Jubilee celebrations Saturday when she was accompanied to the Epsom Derby by her granddaughters, Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie.
The princesses were part of a large royal party, which also included their dad Prince Andrew, as the family began the weekend of fun to mark 60 years on the throne for the Queen. Their mother, Sarah Ferguson, the Duchess of York, even Tweeted: "So proud of my of my beautiful daughters and how special to be at the Epsom Derby supporting their Granny what an amazing Grandmother the Queen is."

Her show The Beautiful Life was cancelled almost before it began, but that didn't stop Mischa Barton from resuming her own beautiful life on Monday night at a party in New York City.
Demonstrating that she'd regained her model figure with a Versace gown at the Whitney Museum Gala, Barton, 23, said she doesn't mind not working for the small screen anymore.
"I think I need to back away from the whole TV approach," she said. "That whole world of network television, probably isn't, for me, a good idea now. I need to start reading for more serious roles."

Many celebrities rely on bodyguards and a coterie of assistances to keep them in touch with reality, but Mischa Barton's entourage comes on twice as many legs.
"All kinds of things keep me grounded. My dogs and having to wake up and walk them every morning and having to walk them before bed at night," the actress, 23, says. "The routine of everything I do – going to work every day here and working on a television series and how much work that is."
Barton is in New York to film her new CW series The Beautiful Life, though, lately, her own life's been far from pretty. Barton says her close friends in the city have been her safety net, and that, eventually, the media madness will subside.

She has described her recent troubles and being placed on psychiatric hold as "a perfect storm," and now Mischa Barton is offering further details of her July hospitalization to the women of ABC's The View. In an appearance due to air Friday, she blames the problem on pain associated with wisdom-tooth surgery.
Calling her hospitalization "silly," despite being "completely overwhelmed" by her situation, the former O.C. actress, 23, trying to deflect attention away from the subject, says on the program, "I mean, really, it was blown out of proportion, so it's kind of silly now to be talking about it because I'm so fine now, but it was really just a bad time for me," ABC News reports.
Repeating the meteorological analogy, she says, "It was sort of one of those things that was like a perfect storm. Everything happened at once."
