John Hughes made Molly Ringwald a teen star after casting her in his 1984 movie Sixteen Candles. After learning about the writer-director's death on Thursday, Ringwald shared fond words about her frequent collaborator.
"I was stunned and incredibly sad to hear about the death of John Hughes," Ringwald said in a statement. "He was and will always be such an important part of my life."
"He will be missed – by me and by everyone that he has touched," she added. "My heart and all my thoughts are with his family now."
Ringwald, who now stars in The Secret Life of the American Teenager, also had leading roles in Hughes's 1985 classic The Breakfast Club and 1986's Pretty in Pink, which he wrote.

Molly Ringwald isn't logging much sleep these days – and she couldn't be more delighted about it.
"You get up with one of the babies and feed and change that one and get the baby back to sleep, and the other wakes up, and then you feed and change that one," the star of '80s classics Pretty in Pink and Sixteen Candles says of her nocturnal routine since the July 10 arrival of her twin son and daughter, Roman Stylianos and Adele Georgiana.
"It is exhausting, but it's wonderful," the actress, 41, tells PEOPLE in its new issue.
The twins join big sister Mathilda, 5 ½, and dad Panio Gianopoulos, 34, whom Ringwald married in 2007. "After Mathilda was born, I had some things fixed" – surgery to remove fibroids – "that made it easier to get pregnant again," says Ringwald.

Molly Ringwald plays the mother of a pregnant teen on ABC Family's The Secret Life of the American Teenager – but in real-life she's a new mom to twins!
The 80s icon delivered daughter Adele Georgiana and son Roman Stylianos on Friday, July 10 in Los Angeles.
Born naturally, Adele arrived first at 9:01 a.m. followed closely by her brother at 9:04 a.m.
The twins join big sister Mathilda Ereni, 5 ½. As for the age difference between the siblings, "I actually think it's a good thing considering we're having twins," Ringwald, 41, told Fit Pregnancy recently.

Molly Ringwald may be the most nostalgia-inducing star for a generation of movie-goers, but she is not one to get sentimental about things like, say, pregnancy.
When asked if she loves expecting twins, she tells Fit Pregnancy with a laugh, "No. I don't hate it, though. There is something wonderful about it."
Ringwald, who announced her pregnancy in December, says that the limitations of carrying twins takes getting used to. "I find it difficult to be restricted in my movements and to feel vulnerable all the time," she says. "I am used to feeling very strong and active."
