A movie poster for the British biopic Diana, starring Naomi Watts as the ill-fated princess, has been placed on the exact spot directly above the Paris traffic tunnel where she was killed in a car accident 16 years ago.
In reaction, close friends of Diana and other admirers have sharp words to criticize the move as exploitative.
Rosa Monckton, for many years one of Diana's closest confidantes, said: "I really don't have any words to describe how I feel about this cynical and shameless attempt to publicize a film that should never have been made."
She continues: "To have made a film so speculative and as this is disgusting enough, but to then advertise it on the spot at which she died is despicable. … It is a terrible intrusion into her memory, not to mention the lives of her sons, whose feelings are often forgotten in these stories. I would expect them to take it down right now."

Naomi Watts admits that she turned down the role of Princess Diana twice before finally agreeing to play the late royal in the new biopic, Diana.
"I was a little bit torn," she reveals in an interview with the UK's Sunday Times.
And a big reason she felt conflicted about playing the much-loved princess, who died in 1997, was because she worried about what Diana's sons, William and Harry would think about the film.

In the newest trailer for Diana, starring Naomi Watts, viewers get a glimpse of the late princess's love affair with Dr. Hasnat Khan.
After splitting with her husband Prince Charles, Diana embarked on an intense romance with the Pakistani doctor (played by Naveen Andrews). "I'm in love with a heart surgeon," she says.
But Khan was bothered by the intense media scrutiny of their relationship. "If I marry you I have to marry the whole world as well," Andrews's character tells her. "It's impossible."

She was the people's princess, a global fashion icon and, at times, a strained symbol of royalty on the rocks. Now in a new movie, the late Princess Diana comes vividly to life, played uncannily in Diana by Naomi Watts.
A trailer for the film shows Watts, 44, as Diana caught amid the pressures of fame after the former Sloane Ranger married her prince, gave birth to two sons, and then struggled to adhere to the confines of a measured life that seemed against her free-spirited soul. (Watch it below.)
From red carpets and designer ball gowns, to glamorous European yachts and the near-constant onslaught of paparazzi, the biopic focuses on the finals years of Diana's life as she sought new love away from Buckingham Palace. She died after a car crash in a Paris tunnel in August 1997, a tragedy that shocked the world as fans and royal watchers grieved with her sons, Prince William and Prince Harry.

Naomi Watts is a pin-thin actress, but she says she doesn't get that way from depriving herself of good food.
"Luckily, I have fairly good genetics, but I do exercise," she told PEOPLE on Wednesday at The Hollywood Reporter and Jimmy Choo's 25 Most Powerful Stylists luncheon in West Hollywood.
"I really do enjoy my food. I don't starve myself, because if I start denying myself, that's when I want to eat most of all. It's fine. I've pretty much always been this size. It's more about just staying in shape."
