She was the people's princess, a global fashion icon and, at times, a strained symbol of royalty on the rocks. Now in a new movie, the late Princess Diana comes vividly to life, played uncannily in Diana by Naomi Watts.
A trailer for the film shows Watts, 44, as Diana caught amid the pressures of fame after the former Sloane Ranger married her prince, gave birth to two sons, and then struggled to adhere to the confines of a measured life that seemed against her free-spirited soul. (Watch it below.)
From red carpets and designer ball gowns, to glamorous European yachts and the near-constant onslaught of paparazzi, the biopic focuses on the finals years of Diana's life as she sought new love away from Buckingham Palace. She died after a car crash in a Paris tunnel in August 1997, a tragedy that shocked the world as fans and royal watchers grieved with her sons, Prince William and Prince Harry.

Naomi Watts is a pin-thin actress, but she says she doesn't get that way from depriving herself of good food.
"Luckily, I have fairly good genetics, but I do exercise," she told PEOPLE on Wednesday at The Hollywood Reporter and Jimmy Choo's 25 Most Powerful Stylists luncheon in West Hollywood.
"I really do enjoy my food. I don't starve myself, because if I start denying myself, that's when I want to eat most of all. It's fine. I've pretty much always been this size. It's more about just staying in shape."

Thirteen may be an unlucky number ... but 2013 certainly is not – at least for this year's class of Oscar nominees.
Everyone who is up for an Academy Award at the 85th annual ceremony on Feb. 24 was invited to attend a luncheon at the Beverly Hilton hotel on Monday.
There, Bradley Cooper, Hugh Jackman, Naomi Watts, Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain and more stars – as well as nominees from every category – rubbed elbows and posed for the official class photo.

Liev Schreiber and Naomi Watts do enjoy stepping out to an awards show – but it's not exactly a romantic evening away from the kids.
"It's not really what I would call a date night. It's a good room of people," Watts, 44, told PEOPLE Sunday on the red carpet at the Screen Actors Guild Awards, where she was a nominee for outstanding female lead actor for her role in the film The Impossible.
"It's great seeing my wife dressed up," Schreiber, 45, said, after being asked about how fabulous she looked, sparkling in a strapless gown by Marchesa, set off with Christian Louboutin heels, a Salvatore Ferragamo clutch and Fabergé earrings.

Naomi Watts doesn't need to be the only one celebrating her SAG Award nomination on Sunday.
Even if you're only catching the big night from the small screen, honor the actress and her film The Impossible with a specialty cocktail created by mixologists at Jacob's Creek, the Australian wine line for which Watts serves as an ambassador – and is "not a bad looking face for the brand," chief winemaker Bernard Hickin adds.
"This delicately bubbly and bittersweet cocktail is based on the inspiring true story of one family's struggle to survive and locate each other after the catastrophic Tsunami in Southeast Asia," Andrew White, mixologist at the Brooklyneer in N.Y.C., tells PEOPLE.

How to get the jump on your sister Oscar nominees? Host Saturday Night Live – and come out punching.
That was Jennifer Lawrence's modus operandi this weekend, with the Silver Linings Playbook's Best Actress contender taking good-natured swipes at her competition during her silver-tongued opening monologue on the NBC comedy show.
About Jessica Chastain, she said: "In Zero Dark Thirty you caught Bin Laden. So what? In Winter's Bone I caught a squirrel, and then ate it."
Naomi Watts: You were in The Impossible. You know what else is impossible? You beating me on Oscar night."
