Interior designer Nate Berkus can't say enough about his best friend, Tucker. He's loyal, affectionate, happy-go-lucky – and he likes to chase squirrels.

"Tucker is a mutt," Berkus tells PEOPLE of his dog, who is part cocker spaniel. "We go out to dog parks all the time, and I let him run around to chase squirrels. I don't let him actually catch them, of course, but I'm not sure what he would do if he caught one. It's all about the chase for Tucker."

Watching his best furry bud at play is what prompted Berkus, 41, to join the creative team for the 2013 Beneful Dream Dog Park contest, which asks contestants to submit ideas for a $500,000 Dream Dog Park. Berkus will help choose the winner, and design a park in the city of the winning contestant.

"I've known since our first date that Jeremiah was who I wanted to spend the rest of my life with," Berkus, 41, says.

"As we've shared the news of our engagement and been met with so much excitement and support we're both reminded of how important it is that every person have the legal right to marry the one they love."

Nate Berkus Told His Dad That He Was Born Gay – It Wasn't a Choice

Originally posted 02/06/2013 11:30AM

Design star Nate Berkus says gaining his father's trust and respect as he explained that he was born gay – and it wasn't a choice – changed their relationship and helped him move forward in his life.

Berkus, speaking candidly to his mentor, Oprah Winfrey on her Super Soul Sunday series, opened up in a two-part interview, sharing the emotional moments that came with discussing his sexuality.

"I asked my father: 'Do you trust me? Do you respect me? Do you think I'm smart?' He said, 'Yes,' " Berkus, 41, tells Winfrey.

"I said, 'Why would I choose to make my life more difficult – why would anyone choose to make their life more difficult? Do you think I would choose to have this hair? Do you think that I would choose to be 5'9"? I would have been 6'1". It's the exact same thing. The truth of the matter is being gay is the way I was born. I believe this to the core of my being.' "

Talk show host Nate Berkus has been hospitalized and is expected to undergo surgery for appendicitis.

"He was on the Today show this morning and he wasn't feeling well," a rep for the company that produces The Nate Berkus Show tells PEOPLE exclusively. "He powered through and then went straight to the hospital after that and they learned he had appendicitis."

Berkus, 39, had complained that he was under the weather, but didn't cancel his appearance. "He was in a lot of pain," adds the rep. "I don't think people realized how ill he was."

This will mean a schedule setback for the Oprah Winfrey disciple, whose own show debuted in September.

Nate Berkus: Oprah Taught Me to Speak the Truth

Originally posted 05/26/2010 11:30AM

After eight years and 127 makeovers, Nate Berkus made his last appearance on The Oprah Winfrey Show before launching his own daily talk show this fall. Says Winfrey, who ends her hosting run in 2011, "He taught millions of us how to love the way we live. We're so proud of him."
Here's what the fan-favorite and home design king has to say about what he's learned and what he's looking forward to next!

Looking back, it's hard to believe that I first stepped foot on the Oprah stage nearly eight years ago. Tuesday, 66 appearances and 127 makeovers later, I'm stepping off her stage for the last time as I prepare to launch my own new daytime show this September. I've learned a lot over the years while hanging around the halls of Oprah's Harpo Studios, and I've managed to tuck away a few notes, ranging from the obvious to the just plain honest, that I'll be taking with me to The Nate Berkus Show (in syndication on Sept. 13).

First, it's important to speak your truth – whatever it is, just say it. It seems simple, right? But I've seen time and again that it isn't always easy. We hold back our true feelings and beliefs, whether it's from a sense of being polite or fear of hurting someone's feelings. But what I have seen on The Oprah Winfrey Show is that no one benefits from holding back and keeping things bottled up inside. So I pride myself on speaking my mind and not being afraid to give honest feedback. I think we'd all be better off if we did more of that in each of our lives.
