Who didn't get a kick out of Taylor Swift and T-Pain's hysterical opening sketch at this years CMT Awards? Well, it's part of a trend: Left and right country stars are pairing up with mainstream artists for what has proven to be spectacular entertainment.

"In Nashville working for a couple of days with Rascal Flatts and Carrie Underwood," Ne-Yo recently Tweeted. And earlier this month, Timbaland confessed to Radar online that he'd like to work with Swift. "I love her voice," he said, adding he'll make a collaboration happen.

After spending the last four months in Prague where he was shooting the upcoming Tuskegee Airmen drama Red Tails alongside actors Terrence Howard and Cuba Gooding Jr., singer-songwriter Ne-Yo is ready to let loose and head down South.

Hitting the stage at the Essence Music Festival in New Orleans on Friday, Ne-Yo tells PEOPLE he's been prepping his moves. "I'm a little rusty right now; I can admit that! ... But it will not show by the time ya'll see me at Essence! Don't worry!" he assures his fans. Also on the Essence bill: Beyoncé, John Legend and Maxwell.

The star, who recently started rehearsals for his month-long European tour, added: "I've been off the radar while I was shooting [the film], but I'm getting my tour legs back. Performing music is in my blood. It's not like I’ll ever forget how to do it, but anything that you stop doing for a long enough period of time, you get a little rusty."

Life in the fast lane wasn't kind to R&B star Ne-Yo on Monday.

The Grammy winner was sentenced to 24 hours of community service by a Georgia judge after pleading guilty to driving without a license, according to the Atlanta Journal Constitution.

Ne-Yo (real name: Shaffer Smith) – who also pleaded no contest to a reckless driving charge – was pulled over on Feb. 19 by Georgia police at around 2:30 a.m. for driving 105 mph – 50 miles above the speed limit.

The singer-songwriter was then given a ticket for reckless driving and for failure to have a Georgia driver's license.

"I gotta admit, we were like ... 'Lindsay Lohan?'" Ne-Yo tells Billboard magazine. "I mean, I've written for Beyonce Knowles, Mary J. Blige, Rihanna, Celine Dion and ... Lindsay Lohan?"

But after hearing her sing on the track, called "Bossy," Ne-Yo says he and producer Stargate were so impressed that he called Lohan to say how sorry he was for not believing in her. "She did a ridiculously fabulous job," Ne-Yo tells the magazine. "I was so shocked I had to call her and apologize for what I was thinking because she did so good. I think the world is gonna be surprised."
