Emmys' Funniest: Alec Baldwin, Toni Collette, Kristin Chenoweth & Jon Cryer

Sunday night's 61st Primetime Emmy Awards got off to a big yuk even though the first winner of the evening, Kristin Chenoweth, dissolved into tears as she accepted her golden statuette as best supporting actress in a comedy series – ABC's canceled Pushing Daisies.

"I don't know why I'm crying," she said, after thanking her parents. "I'm unemployed now, and I'd like to be on Mad Men. I also like The Office and '24'." Chenoweth concluded by thanking the TV Academy for recognizing a show no longer on the air.

Laughs were the order of the night. When Alec Baldwin delivered his Emmy acceptance speech for best actor in a comedy series, the 30 Rock star, grabbing his statuette from presenter Rob Lowe, told the crowd, "I'd trade this to look like him."

Supporting actor in a sitcom, Jon Cryer, took the Emmy for CBS's Two and a Half Men. Accepting, he said he used to think awards were shallow displays of popularity, while now he sees that they recognize true achievement. He also said of costar Charlie Sheen, "He's amazing."

Fresh Faces Liven Up the Emmy Race

With Family Guy the first animated show to be nominated as best comedy series in nearly half a century, things are looking a little different for this year's 61st annual Primetime Emmys.

TV's biggest night – which CBS will broadcast live Sunday starting at 8 p.m. – is still expected to shower plenty of gold upon NBC's comedy 30 Rock and AMC's drama Mad Men, just like last year, but with How I Met Your Mother star Neil Patrick Harris as the ceremony's first-time host after his stellar turn emceeing June's Tony Awards, the evening should also benefit from some categories starring new contenders.

Classic example: with Jeremy Piven bypassed for a nomination in the supporting actor category for his hard-driving agent role on HBO's Entourage, the field is open for such actors as Jack McBrayer, the slack-jawed page Kenneth on 30 Rock; his clueless-acting costar Tracy Morgan; and even the constantly stupefied Johnny Drama of Entourage, played by Kevin Dillon. (Also vying are Two and a Half Men's Jon Cryer, The Office's Rainn Wilson and Emmy host Harris, for his sitcom.)

Alyson Hannigan: Baby's 'The Best Thing That's Ever Happened to Me'

It's unusual to celebrate your first day back at work after a summer vacation, but that's just what the cast and crew of How I Met Your Mother did this week.

They had plenty to celebrate: In addition to Neil Patrick Harris's third consecutive Emmy nomination for best supporting actor in a comedy, the CBS sitcom nabbed its first nomination in the best comedy category – and stars Alyson Hannigan and Cobie Smulders became mothers over their summer breaks.

Opting for orange juice rather than a champagne toast while backstage her husband Alexis Denisof looked after 4-month-old Satyana, Hannigan told PEOPLE, "I'm so fortunate that she's here. We set up a nursery, and daddy and baby are in nursery right now. So I can run off and get to see them when I have scenes off. It's the best thing that's ever happened to me! I'm so in love."

Neil Patrick Harris Addresses Emmys Controversy

Originally posted 08/04/2009 08:40AM

Neil Patrick Harris is finding out how tough it can be to host the Emmy Awards – a full seven weeks before the broadcast even airs.

The How I Met Your Mother star, chosen last month to emcee TV's biggest night on Sept. 20, spoke to reporters Monday about a burgeoning outcry over CBS's plans to time-shift part of the telecast.

The network plans to tape the award presentations in some categories 45 minutes before the broadcast begins. Some writers and producers are worried this will marginalize their work, but Harris, 36, said that's not the case.

Family Guy Helps Make Emmy History

While Emmy didn't bite HBO's vampire hit True Blood for any of the major categories, Family Guy became the first animated series since The Flintstones in 1961 to be nominated as best comedy series – which will pit it against a record six other programs, it was announced Thursday morning.

Besides the often outrageous adventures of the Griffin family, the outstanding comedy series nominees are Entourage, Flight of the Conchords, How I Met Your Mother, The Office, 30 Rock and Weeds.

Dramatic series nominees are Big Love, Breaking Bad, Damages, Dexter, House, Lost and Mad Men.

First the Tonys, Now the Emmys for Neil Patrick Harris

Okay, Oscars: fair warning. This year's Tonys host Neil Patrick Harris is going to emcee the Sept. 20 Emmy Awards, it was officially announced Monday after word slipped out July 2.

"After having had such a hoot hosting the Tonys, I was thrilled to get the call about the primetime Emmys," said the How I Met Your Mother star, 36, the Associated Press reports.

As for "adding my own voice" to the proceedings, which honors TV's best, Harris wonders, "But which voice to choose? I'm torn between gangsta, foppish Brit and robot. Really proud of my robot. We'll see what happens on the night."

Playing host seems to agree with Neil Patrick Harris. After last year's Creative Arts Emmy Awards, and the June Tonys, the star of How I Met Your Mother is in talks to host the Emmys, which is set to air Sept. 20.

The actor told PEOPLE in June that he planned to emulate Jon Stewart when he hosted the Tonys, but there's no word yet on his inspirations for the 61st annual Emmy Awards.

The deal isn't sealed yet, according to the The Envelope. Stay tuned!

With costars Alyson Hannigan and Cobie Smulders starting families, is How I Met Your Mother star Neil Patrick Harris next?

In a statement to PEOPLE, Harris, who recently hosted the Tony Awards to great reviews, didn't directly address a report that he and longtime partner, David Burtka, are searching for a surrogate mother except to say, "We are not currently expecting a baby."

But adds Harris, 36, "Maybe someday …"
