Late into the 65th annual Emmys ceremony Sunday on CBS, host Neil Patrick Harris announced: "No one in America is winning their Emmy office pool."
If you did happen to win, you should consider a career in statistical forecasting. The awards were all over the place.
Of the night's many surprises, the biggest was in the category of best actor. Academy voters for once decided not to give the prize to Breaking Bad's Bryan Cranston – but instead of rewarding Mad Men's Jon Hamm, the perennial also-ran, they chose Jeff Daniels of HBO's The Newsroom. Perhaps they concluded that Hamm is already lousy with nominations, and handsome as the devil, and that should hold him. Daniels is a fine actor, as you'll discover if you catch just about any of his many performances of the past three decades, but The Newsroom's first season was a pounding surf of angry, righteous yammering. Oh well.
Here's what else the Emmys got right and wrong:

If you weren't watching the Emmy Awards Sunday night, we don't know what you were doing. (Actually, we do because we almost flipped the channel to Breaking Bad, too.)
Sure, we were disappointed when host Neil Patrick Harris chose tap over twerk, but there was plenty of action (and lots of dance) packed into the three-hour show.
We're breaking down the five things you missed:

It's a decision that every Emmy host has to make for him or herself – how low do you go with the blows toward your fellow entertainers in the audience?
Well, Neil Patrick Harris got right into it during his monologue, and he even brought along some former hosts to help him do it.
In case you missed it, here's a recap of the monologue's best zingers:

Neil Patrick Harris and his fiancé David Burtka haven't specifically told their twins about their entertainment careers.
That said, Harris, 40, who is hosting Sunday's Primetime Emmy Awards on Sunday, says their professional paths are pretty apparent because they've given their nearly 3-year-old little ones a very hands-on experience.
"I don't have any reason to tell them what we do for a living," the How I Met Your Mother funnyman told PEOPLE on Wednesday at an Emmy preview. "They've come to set. They know the crew. They got to come to the Tony rehearsals and watch the Cinderella dancers with all of their finest gownery and do their dancing, which was cool."

Neil Patrick Harris admits that it took a while for him to adjust to being a dad to twins Harper and Gideon.
"The first year with them was complicated," he says in an interview with USA Weekend. "They were crying a lot."
But as the toddlers approach their third birthday in October, it's a whole different ball game.

Television is at an all-time high.
With millions flocking to their sofas for primetime series' premieres and sitcom actors joining the A-list, the 2013 Emmy Awards (airing Sunday, Sept. 22 at 8 PM ET on CBS) will honor the best of the small screen.
On Thursday morning, the nominees for the 65th Annual Emmy Awards were announced by Aaron Paul and Neil Patrick Harris.
With American Horror Story: Asylum, Game of Thrones, Saturday Night Live and HBO's Behind the Candelabra leading the pack, here's how Hollywood reacted to their nominations.

Neil Patrick Harris has already lined up his next high-profile gig once the series finale of How I Met Your Mother airs later this year – he's Broadway-bound.
The singing and dancing triple threat, who hosted the Tony Awards for the fourth time on June 9 (to great reviews), is set to don a wig, dress and high heels for his role as a German transgender rock singer in spring 2014's first Broadway production of the musical Hedwig and the Angry Inch, which features a book by John Cameron Mitchell and music and lyrics by Stephen Trask.
"I am simultaneously ecstatic and terrified to be stepping into Hedwig's high heels," Harris said in a statement.

Neil Patrick Harris got the best birthday and Father's Day combo treat.
The How I Met Your Mother star – who turned the big 4-0 on Saturday, just one day shy of the day to honor dads – captured the most adorable photo of his and partner, David Burtka's two-year-old twins, Gideon Scott and Harper Grace.
After jokingly Tweeting that he only wants "lots of presents" for his birthday – "good ones. Well thought out gifts" – the funnyman followed up by writing, "Never mind. I've got the two best gifts in the world sitting right in front of me," and he posted a little snapshot of his cuties.
