Nick Carter to Dr. Phil: My Family Blamed Me for My Sister's Death

Nick Carter is coming clean about his issues.

The Backstreet Boy says he hit rock bottom after years of alcohol and drug abuse but has made a dramatic turnaround in his struggle with addiction, even as he continues to work on painful family relationships and cope with the death of his sister last year.

Carter, in an exclusive interview with Dr. Phil, gets candid about his demons, saying he started using marijuana when he was just 15 and then began taking Vicodin and Ecstasy. But in 2008, he was diagnosed with a heart condition, promptly stopping him in his tracks and spurring him to face his problems.

"I made that choice right there and said, 'I do not want to be this person anymore,'" Carter, 33, told Dr. Phil in an episode that aired Monday. "You have to find that moment in your life – that moment of clarity – and say, 'Is this who you want to be the rest of your life, or do you deserve more?' I decided I deserved better."

McLean – made nice with a group of panda cubs during a visit to the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding in the country's Sichuan province.

Judging from the photo, we're not sure which quintet had the better time: While each guy happily cradled his furry buddy, the little ones gleefully kicked back, too, relaxing and indulging in delicious drinks.

Originally posted 02/03/2012 10:30AM

In Nick Carter's first live performance since sister Leslie died earlier this week, the singer hit the stage at New York City's Irving Plaza Thursday night with a high-energy show. He also took a moment to dedicate a ballad to his sibling.

Members of the mostly-female audience held up pink paper hearts in honor of Leslie, a gesture Carter acknowledged during the show.

Laura Codd, the fan who made the hearts, said they were also meant to thank Carter for not canceling the show.

"I made 100 of them and passed them out to the crowd ... to show we love him and support him and we appreciate him still coming out and performing tonight," said Codd, 26.
