Six months after Nikki Blonsky and her family were involved in a highly publicized airport brawl with America’s Next Top Model contestant Bianca Golden, the Hairspray actress says she and her family have emerged closer than ever.
"We are a very strong family, we love each other and nothing will ever tear us down,” Blonsky told PEOPLE Saturday night at the Silver Lining Society Winter Gala in N.Y.C. to benefit The Hope & Heroes Children’s Cancer Fund. "I don’t even need to defend myself. It’s pretty obvious that it was just a big scam.”
Blonsky, 20, and Golden, 20, were cleared of all charges stemming from the July 30, 2008 incident, but Blonsky's father, Carl Golden, still faces charges in Turks and Caicos, where the incident took place.

America's Next Top Model contestant Bianca Golden is speaking out for the first time about the Caribbean airport brawl, saying both Hairspray star Nickki Blonsky and her father attacked Golden's mother.
Golden says on the Oct. 8 episode of The Tyra Banks Show that her family was at the Turks & Caicos airport on July 29 returning from a family reunion for her dying grandfather when Nikki Blonsky became "very rude to my aunt."
An argument erupted between Blonsky's and Golden's families, then Blonsky's father Carl "punched my mom."
"He knocked her out," says Golden. "He hit my mom with such force she stumbled back and when she stumbled back the whole family got up and attacked my mom."
Then, when her mother was on the ground, Nikki "takes her foot and kicks my mom in her vagina, and that's when my mom fell out completely," says Golden.

The father of Hairspray actress Nikki Blonsky must stay behind bars in Turks and Caicos until a trial starts on Aug. 19, a judge ruled in a heated hearing Friday.
Carl Blonsky, 53, faces assault charges in connection with a July 29 airport brawl that police say involved him, daughter Nikki, America's Next Top Model contestant Bianca Golden, and Golden's mother, Elaine.
Prosecutor Samantha Glinton said Blonsky – who is charged with assault with grievous bodily harm, a felony punishable by up to five years in jail – injured Elaine Golden so badly she had to be airlifted to a hospital in Aventura, Fla. She stayed for five days before being released to a neurologist, according to medical documents Glinton presented.
