Olivia Newton-John: Get Well Soon, Christina Applegate

Olivia Newton-John, a breast-cancer survivor who feels "an instant rapport" with others who have the disease, says she is thinking of Christina Applegate and planning to connect with the Samantha Who? star during her time of recovery.

"I haven't met her yet, but I've always liked her and admired her as an actress and would like to just say 'Hey,' so I will," Newton-John told PEOPLE at Project Angel Food's Angel Awards in Los Angeles on Saturday.

Breast-cancer survivors form a kind of sisterhood, says Newton-John, 59, who was diagnosed with the disease in 1992. Asked how her battle and recovery have helped her connect with strangers who have the disease, she replied, "We're not strangers, and particularly if you've been through something like this. I feel connected.

"You understand where they've been. There's that compassion, that connection with someone. So, I feel very lucky that I'm here. I feel lucky that I can pass on the message that I am here."

Olivia Newton-John’s recent wedding to John Easterling came as a surprise to everyone who knows her – except her daughter, Chloe.

"My family was surprised," Olivia tells PEOPLE of her June 21 vow exchange in Peru, "but my daughter knew – I told my daughter."

It wasn't until a July 4 barbeque at her home in Malibu that the singer, 59, shared the big news with the rest of her close family and friends – and by then, she and Easterling, a natural-health businessman, had already said "I do" a second time in Jupiter Island, Fla.

Why all the secrecy? "It was the one thing I could keep private," she explains. "That's how we wanted it because my life is so public."

Olivia Newton-John China-Bound for Cancer Walk

Olivia Newton-John, a breast cancer survivor since the '90s, will head to Asia in April trek along Great Wall of China to raise money for a cancer charity.

The singer-actress, 59, has rallied celebrity pals – including Jane Seymour, Joan Rivers, Leeza Gibbons and British pop singer Sir Cliff Richard – to join the 141-mile walk, which will culminate in Beijing, Reuters reports.

"I think it is going to be mind-blowingly exciting to see the place and to know that we are doing something that we will never do in a lifetime again," said Newton-John. "This is a lifetime experience."

The goal is to raise funds for a cancer research and treatment center in Newton'-John's hometown of Melbourne, Australia.
