Before Michelle Monaghan went public with news that she's pregnant with her first child, her Made of Honor costar, Patrick Dempsey was already aware of her condition.
"It was a big secret, and I wasn't allowed to tell anyone, but I knew Michelle was pregnant, and I am thrilled for her," Dempsey, 42, told PEOPLE on Friday – as he prepared to race this weekend in the Six Hours of the Glen Grand-Am Rolex Sports Car Series at Watkins Glen International in upstate New York.
"She will be a great mom because she has a good head on her shoulders, a fine husband, and overall, she is a lovely woman," he said.

Even before meeting Jillian, his wife of nine years, Patrick Dempsey "was a serial monogamist," he says.
"I've never found it easy to have one-night stands ... it tears away at your soul," the Grey's Anatomy and Made of Honor star, 42, tells the U.K. edition of Glamour" magazine for June. "By the time you open yourself up, you have to close yourself off."
Dempsey credits his spouse, a hairdresser now consulting for Avon, with turning around his life after years of losing out on roles, partly because his dyslexia made it difficult to learn lines for auditions.

He may be at home on screen at Seattle Grace Hospital, but on Tuesday Patrick Dempsey made a special appearance at the Central Maine Medical Center, to announce plans for a new cancer center to be named in his honor.
Scheduled to open March 31, the Patrick Dempsey Center for Cancer Hope & Healing was inspired by his mother, Amanda Dempsey, who fought ovarian cancer – and who is now cancer free, reports Maine's Kennebec Journal.
Born in Lewiston, Maine, the Grey's Anatomy star told assembled media that dealing with his mother's illness – and tracking down information about it – prompted his action.

As the father of 10-month-old twins, Patrick Dempsey can more than relate to the recent health scare that threatened the lives of Dennis Quaid's newborns.
"There's nothing worse than hearing your child is going to go through something like that," Dempsey, 41, tells Entertainment Tonight in an interview set to air Dec. 10. "The person that administered that shot has got to feel horrible. Medical science is not perfect and that's a real tragedy. Hopefully they will recover, but only time will tell."
