Sunday's Downton Abbey on PBS Masterpiece brought a nice, gentle close to a difficult, unsatisfactory season. At the end we got to see Mr. Carson and Mrs. Hughes on a rare day off, at the English seaside, wading into the water and holding hands like two children afraid of being carried off by a wave.
This may even have hinted at a growing, sunset intimacy between the two. Given all the misalliances on Downton, what could be better than the prospect of a romance between the two characters with the best hearts?
Considering last season's brutal finale and the sometimes ridiculous swings of the show's plot, this could very well mean that Carson winds up like poor Mr. Pamuk, smuggled out of a bedroom wrapped in a sheet. Not yet, anyway.

No stranger to period pieces – as those who saw him in the superlative HBO miniseries John Adams will attest – Paul Giamatti is joining the cast of Downton Abbey next year, for the season 4 finale, PBS announced on its website Monday.
He'll play the playboy brother of Cora, Countess of Grantham (Elizabeth McGovern), and the son of Martha Levinson (Shirley MacLaine, who is also returning to the popular British drama).
"Downton Abbey has seen many great characters visit the house over the years, and we couldn't be more thrilled to welcome the new faces that will be joining the regular cast of Downton Abbey in Season 4," the show's executive producer, Gareth Neame, said in a statement that really doesn't spill any beans.

Robert Pattinson put on a happy face Monday night, at the afterparty following the New York City premiere of Cosmopolis.
Making his way to the PH-D Rooftop Lounge at Manhattan's Dream Downtown hotel at around 10 p.m., the heartbroken actor – who was recently cheated on by girlfriend Kristen Stewart – sipped a bottle of beer and took regular puffs from an electronic cigarette, according to an onlooker.
"He was very charismatic, all smiles, looking very relaxed and hugging all who stopped by to say hi," the insider tells PEOPLE about Pattinson, who left around midnight. "The general crowd gravitated towards his table, but he was shielded by security. He was surrounded by women and the movie's cast."
Adds the source, "The whole room was watching him, and he looked genuinely at ease and comfortable the whole time."
Other guests at the fete included Judah Friedlander, Shia LaBeouf and the film's costar Paul Giamatti, who stayed "away from the cast, looking over at Rob, and looked like he felt sorry for him," the source says.
Earlier in the day, Pattinson did his best at cracking jokes with Jon Stewart during a taping of The Daily Show.

Jessica and Ashlee, Britney and Jamie-Lynn – Hollywood's fascination with sisters is alive and well, and the Duff family is taking it up a notch. Actress-singer Hilary and big sis Haylie – who teamed up for a remake of the 1981 Go-Go's hit song "Our Lips Are Sealed" and toured together over the summer – are taking on the movie Material Girls, set to begin filming in April. "It’s just a fun movie about sisters who have a ton of money," Haylie told us recently. "They’re heiresses in the movie, with all their money. Then it’s kind of how they turn into good people. It’s cool. It’s a funny movie, and we’re remaking the song by Madonna." As for what else she's up to, the elder Duff says, "I'm working on Joan of Arcadia right now. I'm doing five weeks over there. I'm having so much fun. Amber Tamblyn is wonderful." Any word on Hilary? "My sister’s finally finishing up the Most Wanted tour that we did together in the U.S. She's doing another leg of it in Canada right now," says Haylie. "So she gets back in a couple of weeks. Then we're doing a Material Girls tour to promote the movie. We'll do that together next summer, June maybe." Stay tuned ...
