After six years starring as Damon on The Vampire Diaries, Ian Somerhalder moved behind the camera for the very first time to direct Thursday's episode.
Having just learned that his mother may have actually been alive (or, more accurately, undead) for the past 100-plus years, Damon enters "The Downward Spiral" with a whole new set of abandonment issues.
In an exclusive chat with PEOPLE, the actor, 36, opens up about what it was like to direct for the very first time (which, funnily enough, segued into musings about the inevitable march of time), what's coming up for Delena (and even Bamon) and his ideal ending for The Vampire Diaries.

[BRIGHTCOVE "4102856065001" "" "" "auto"] Could Damon and Stefan's mother be a vampire?
Though Damon (Ian Somerhalder) had always been under the impression that his mother died of consumption in 1858, the last episode of The Vampire Diaries revealed that Lily (Annie Wersching) was alive in a prison world in 1903 after Bonnie (Kat Graham) caught her on video.
When TVD returns from hiatus Thursday, Somerhalder makes his directorial debut in an episode that has Damon trying to get to the truth about his mother.

[BRIGHTCOVE "4029611808001" "" "" "auto"] We all cope with grief and loss in our own ways.
On Thursday's episode of The Vampire Diaries, our intrepid heroes decide to celebrate Bonnie's (Kat Graham) birthday because it's what she would have wanted, despite her still being trapped in another dimension.
In an exclusive sneak peek at "The Day I Tried to Live," we see that Caroline (Candice Accola) has decided to focus her grief over her ailing mother and a disappeared Bonnie onto an object: a teddy bear named Miss Cuddles.

The Vampire Diaries' midseason premiere, "Woke Up with a Monster," certainly gave fans a lot of options as to who might meet an impending and untimely end in the near future.
As the series begins its sprint to the season finale, characters both beloved and brand new stared down death.
Star Paul Wesley directed the episode, which picked up directly after Kai (Chris Wood) abducted Elena (Nina Dobrev) and as Caroline (Candice Accola) struggled to accept her mother's cancer diagnosis. Even amid those merciless circumstances, Elena and Sheriff Forbes (Marguerite MacIntyre) weren't the only folks in Mystic Falls whose lives were in peril.
But who looks most likely to say goodbye sooner rather than later?

When we last left the denizens of Mystic Falls, many of them were in mortal (or immortal) peril. Obviously.
Elena (Nina Dobrev) was kidnapped by Kai (Chris Wood), Enzo (Michael Malarkey) has vowed to ruin Stefan's life, and Matt (Zach Roerig) has been roped into helping him. Meanwhile, Caroline's (Candice Accola) mother has an inoperable brain tumor that vampire blood can't cure.
To find out whether our intrepid heroes will ever experience any modicum of happiness, The Vampire Diaries returns from its midseason hiatus on Thursday, with Paul Wesley at the helm as director.

Picking up right where season 1 left off, The Vampire Diaries returned with a vengeance Thursday as Katherine (Nina Dobrev) managed to immediately insert herself between a barely united Stefan (Paul Wesley) and Damon (Ian Somerhalder).
After realizing he had kissed Katherine and not Elena, Damon felt the sting of Elena's rejection when she told him she wasn't surprised he would make a move on her, but was surprised he thought she'd ever reciprocate. Feeling hurt, Damon fell into old habits, resisting the urge to kill Katherine the next time they met and instead, passionately throwing himself at her. But their reunion proved short-lived when Damon asked her to finally pick just one Salvatore brother, and Katherine chose Stefan, saying she never loved Damon and it was Stefan she came back for.
Never one to give up without a fight, a drunken Damon later surprised Elena in her bedroom and attempted to convince her that there was something between them, even managing to plant a kiss. But echoing Katherine's sentiments from earlier that night, Elena also chose Stefan, saying he would always be the one for her.
