How DWTS Couple Maks and Peta Balance Touring and Time Together: Weeks Apart Are 'Just a Hiccup'

Maks Chmerkovskiy Talks Balancing Work and Love with Girlfriend Peta Murgatroyd, Calls Time Apart 'a Hiccup' Along the Way

Originally posted 08/03/2015 01:50PM

Nobody knows better than Dancing with the Stars favorites Maksim Chmerkovskiy and Peta Murgatroyd that it takes two to tango.

Chmerkovskiy admits that he and Murgatroyd, 29, must make an effort to keep in touch as she travels around the country on this summer's Dancing with the Stars Live! tour. But, says the former pro, a brief time apart is only a small bump in their journey.

"We just decide to not go longer than a couple weeks [without seeing each other]," Chmerkovskiy tells PEOPLE at the 10th anniversary party for Dance with Me, a chain of dance studios that he co-founded. "It's a hiccup in the grand scheme of things. There's a whole life together depending on how you take of yourself."

Chmerkovskiy, 35, says he and his on-again/off-again girlfriend, who have been romantically linked since 2012, could not be happier. "Everything's amazing," he gushed. "She's awesome."

For all those hoping Maksim Chmerkovskiy will return to Dancing with the Stars, don't hold your breath.

The pro dancer recently revealed in a Glamour magazine interview that he would "definitely not" be returning to the show.

"You have to walk away when the time is right, and the time was right, " he says, adding, "I think the change of guard is necessary."

Dancing with the Stars pros Peta Murgatroyd and Maksim Chmerkovskiy were spotted holding hands while leaving the West Hollywood eatery Craig's on Monday night.

Clearly romance was still in the air following DWTS contestant Noah Galloway's on-air proposal earlier that night. Though Murgatroyd, 28, and her partner for this season, Michael Sam, were eliminated in early April, she posted a photo to Instagram last week of herself and Chmerkovskiy, 35, keeping up on DWTS last week.

The Story Behind Michael Sam's Emotional Final Dancing with the Stars Performance

Originally posted 04/07/2015 11:30AM

Michael Sam, the NFL's first openly gay player, was eliminated from Dancing with the Stars on Monday following his best, most emotional performance yet.

The theme was "my most memorable year," and, like Rumer Willis, Sam's most memorable year was 2014. It was the year he came out as gay, and the year he and his father stopped speaking for the second time in their tumultuous relationship.

Sam's dance, a rumba performed with Peta Murgatroyd to "I'm Not My Father's Son," was not met well by the judges from a technical standpoint – the pair received a 30 out of 40. However, judge Bruno Tonioli praised Sam, 25, for his "guts": "Your voice is very important, and I guarantee you, it's helped a lot of people." Carrie Ann Inaba echoed the sentiment, telling Sam that "Dance is so much more than movement."

Dancing with the Stars Recap: The Stars Share Their Most Memorable Year

Originally posted 04/06/2015 11:00PM

Routines themed around the Stars' most memorable years made for good video packages but not-so-inspired dances. I mean, how do you adequately pay homage to an IED attack?

Judge Len Goodman certainly wasn't in the mood for sob stories: the ol' boy was grumpy all night and didn't seem to like anybody, least of all Rumer Willis, who performed a brilliant waltz as a snub to all her early haters.

Then again, anybody can have a bad night in the ballroom. Witness: Michael Sam and Riker Lynch, who both found themselves in jeopardy by the end of Monday's episode.

Before you learn the guys' fate, check out a sampling of the performances from a night of memories (as well as a few moments we'd love to forget).

Dancing with the Stars Recap: A 'Jam'-Packed Night

Originally posted 03/23/2015 11:55PM

Here's a little behind-the-scenes Dancing with the Stars scoop to start off the recap: I understand our stars learned as early as Friday when they would be dancing during "My Jam Monday."

So, for example, Prince Farming Chris Soules knew before the weekend that he'd get to kick off tonight's show while Lady Marmalade herself (a.k.a. Patti LaBelle ) was rewarded the last dance of the evening well in advance of tonight's performance.

Now put the shoe on the other foot: What could be more disheartening than knowing that you aren't strong enough to open or close the night – and realizing how your middle-of-the-show positioning brings you closer to the ol' heave-ho?

So, which dancers proved they might be worthy of prime placement next week? And what about the contestants whose so-so performance last week put them at risk of elimination? Read on for the night's highlights and to see who came close to leaving DWTS first.

Dancing with the Stars Recap: Which Celebrity Brought Down the House – and Attracted Big Stars?

Originally posted 03/16/2015 11:00PM

It was a big night in the ballroom – and not just because John McClane and GI Jane were in the house! Monday's installment of Dancing with the Stars kicked off the first of what the network promised would include lots of action-packed tributes to the show's 10th anniversary.

The premiere episode didn't disappoint. There were lots of contemporary tunes ("Uptown Funk," "Take Me to Church"), plenty of showstopping choreography (Derek Hough, so glad you stuck around this season!) and even quadruple hanky moments (welcome to the ballroom, Army vet and amputee Noah Galloway!).

No 9s or 10s were awarded just yet, but a couple of celebrities sure came close to earning some high scores. Here's how the new contenders fared on night one:
