Why Peter Dinklage Should Win the Emmy for Game of Thrones

How do you stand out among the dozens of cast members on Game of Thrones (fully two-thirds of whom seem to be gruff, bearded men)? As Tyrion Lannister, the wise-cracking dwarf played by Peter Dinklage, proves, it helps to not take things too seriously.

While the HBO fantasy series' assorted lords and ladies backstab their way to courtly domination, Tyrion is one of the the few characters who sees the game of thrones as the cosmic joke that is it – even as he remains one of its best players.

Dinklage, 45, who's nominated for outstanding supporting actor in a drama series, is the audience stand-in, and his withering wit helps bring a show full of dragons and ice zombies down to a human level.

Peter Dinklage may not be a typical Hollywood star. But he certainly faces the thrills and challenges of being a huge celebrity – as evidenced by his being mobbed by admirers.

"Game of Thrones fans are the nicest people ever, but a thousand nice people coming at me gives me claustrophobia," the actor, who plays Tyrion Lannister on HBO's hit fantasy series, tells Playboy in a new interview.

"I can't wear a pair of sunglasses and pull my hat down and just disappear. I'm 4½ feet tall, so I sort of stand out."

Game of Thrones: 5 Things We Love (Slash Are Obsessed With)

HBO's Game of Thrones, now at the start of its third season, seems to have been weighted into a catapult and sent soaring through the air: What was already a massive hit has become a buzzed-about, addictive phenomenon.

The show is – as one says, of such epic productions – teeming with characters. It swarms with plots, subplots and side-plots. If you missed the first two seasons, you might be afraid to just jump in. Don't be.

Just remember that everyone's motive is essentially the same: Win the Iron Throne and control all the kingdoms. (Think of Jerry Seinfeld chasing down the marble rye, but there are hundred of Jerrys and only one loaf.)

Oh, and everyone wants to avoid being brutally slaughtered.

You'll be hooked fast enough, and you'll develop your own set of obsessions to anticipate each week. These are mine:
