Captain Phil Harris would be proud.

The late skipper's two sons, Josh, 27, and Jake, 24, have signed a new contract with the Discovery Channel for the next season of Deadliest Catch, according to a New York Times report.

The move is a poignant one in light of their father's death at age 53 last February.

The stars of The Deadliest Catch are tough guys who make their living doing grueling work – but the death of Capt. Phil Harris earlier this year dealt a terrible blow to his fellow fisherman, particularly his two sons, Jake and Josh.

"We are staying in contact with Phil’s boys quite often and I don’t think they’ve fully adjusted yet," Capt. Sig Hansen tells PEOPLE. "They’ve gone through their ups and downs, obviously. but they’ve got a long way to go."

Shortly after his father’s death, Jake Harris was charged with reckless driving, and later a bench warrant was issued for the young fisherman after he failed to show for a court hearing.

Captain Phil Harris, the late star of Discovery's Deadliest Catch, led most of his adult life on the Bering Sea, fishing for crab and teaching the trade to his sons Josh and Jake. When he came ashore, Harris spent his time riding motorcycles and bonding with friends.

Fittingly, his loved ones have incorporated all these parts of the skipper's life into a series of tributes for the fallen fisherman, who died at the age of 53 on Feb. 9.

"There was a private memorial for friends and family of Phil Feb. 21, at the Tulalip Resort Casino," says Harris's business partner and manager Russ Herriott. The same casino, a 30-minute drive north of Seattle, was the gathering spot for those close to Harris in the immediate days after he died as well.

Jake Harris of TV's Deadliest Catch wasn't boozing and wasn't on drugs the night of his DUI arrest, his attorney tells PEOPLE.

"He didn't have a sip of alcohol," lawyer Ed Ritter says. "This whole case stemmed from an anonymous caller who alleged he was driving erratically, but there's no evidence of that."

Harris, 24, whose father Capt. Phil Harris died from complications of a stroke on Feb. 9, was pulled over in his father's BMW nine days later in Seattle and was booked with DUI, hit-and-run and driving with a suspended license.

His face looms over the Web site, the tobacco-stained smile, gray-flecked beard, hair tousled by arctic winds, squinted eyes full of adventure.

"Phil Harris was called home and will forever be remembered," writes the crew of the Alaskan crab boat the Northwestern, one of many tributes pouring in for the Cornelia Marie captain from TV's Deadliest Catch who died late Tuesday at age 53 following a recent stroke.

Another boat from the hit Discovery Channel show, the Time Bandit, posted this message online: "Our thoughts and prayers go out to Phil Harris. May God bless and care for Phil and his family."
