Academy Award Nominations: Lincoln Leads the Pack

Originally posted 01/10/2013 08:15AM

This year's Oscars may not take place until Feb. 24, but the ceremony's host, Seth MacFarlane, already started earning his salary Thursday morning – by joining Emma Stone to announce the nominees for the 85th annual Academy Awards from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' headquarters in Beverly Hills.

And the name that kept coming up: Lincoln, which reaped the lion's share number of nominations, 12, including those for Best Picture, Best Director Steven Spielberg, Best Actor Daniel Day-Lewis and Supporting Actress Sally Field.

Other highly recognized films were Life of Pi, with 11 nominations; Les Misérables, with nine; and Argo, with seven, though, surprisingly, not one for its director Ben Affleck.

Joaquin Phoenix Is Remarkable in The Master: Review

To say that Naval officer Freddie Quell (Joaquin Phoenix in The Master) survived World War II would be to overstate the matter. While Freddie did not die, the bent, feral man who squints out of his right eye and talks out of the left side of his mouth is far from whole.

Sexually rapacious and a blistering drunk, Freddie is a lost sheep in need of a flock. As it happens, Lancaster Dodd (Philip Seymor Hoffman) is a shepherd. Personable and generous to Freddie when the young man stows away on his boat, Lancaster seems every bit Freddie's opposite.

Lancaster is also the founder of the Cause, a religious movement with clear parallels to Scientology. But this is not a movie about Scientology. Director Paul Thomas Anderson is far more interested in the dynamic between the men than he is in investigating religion. Fortunately, Hoffman and Phoenix know just how to make that dynamic riveting.

Philip Seymour Hoffman Cast in Catching Fire

Looks like Catching Fire is heating up: Philip Seymour Hoffman has just been cast as Plutarch Heavensbee in the film adaptation of Suzanne Collins's bestselling novel.

Heavensbee, who replaces Seneca Crane as the new Head Gamemaker in the second installment of the Hunger Games trilogy, is a pretty complicated guy. After all, you never really know whether he's friend or foe until the very end of the book.

But complex roles are nothing new for the Oscar winner, 44, as shown by The Ides of March, Moneyball and Capote (for which he was named Best Actor).

Philip Seymour Hoffman is enjoying fatherhood all over again with his 1-year-old daughter Talluhlah, he tells PEOPLE.

"She's now smiling, standing up," the Capote Oscar-winner said at the New York afterparty for the premiere of his film Savages Monday.

Hoffman, who already has a 4-year-old son, Cooper, with girlfriend Mimi O'Donnell, says it's difficult to balance his career and fatherhood, but he wouldn't have it any other way.
