Ellen DeGeneres 'Falls More in Love with Portia All the Time'

When Ellen DeGeneres came out as gay 17 years ago, the unexpected professional backlash and personal isolation that followed was a rude awakening.

"I thought everyone knew me and I didn't think that one little adjective was going to define me," DeGeneres, 56, exclusively tells PEOPLE in the latest issue. "I didn't have perspective for a while."

But these days, with a hugely successful daily talk show, best-selling books and an upcoming gig as the host of the 86th Annual Academy Awards on March 2, that painful rough patch is a distant, if surreal, memory.

"Now I look at it as a movie that I saw that someone went through," she says, "and I only experience the amazing life that I have right now."

One big reason for DeGeneres' gratitude: her thriving marriage to actress Portia de Rossi, whom she wed in 2008. "I love her so much it kills me," says DeGeneres.

Ellen DeGeneres Addresses Rumors of Trouble in Her Marriage

Originally posted 12/11/2013 08:00PM

Ellen DeGeneres wants the world to know that despite reports to the contrary, she's "happily married" to Portia de Rossi.

The talk show host addressed rumors about their five-year marriage during a hilarious monologue on The Ellen DeGeneres Show on Wednesday, that began with a trip to the hair salon.

"The other day I'm at the hair salon getting these extensions," DeGeneres joked. "And there's tabloids all over the hair salon – that's where they are, I guess. All of a sudden I notice one sitting on the counter in front of me [and] it caught my eye because Portia and I were in the top right-hand corner and I thought, 'Oh, that's sweet, they're honoring us.' Ellen DeGeneres: Being a Vegan Doesn't Make Thanksgiving Harder

Ellen DeGeneres and wife Portia de Rossi are both vegan, but that doesn't stop them from enjoying a Thanksgiving feast.

So what does The Ellen DeGeneres Show host fill her plate with?

"Yams, green beans, stuffing ... any kind of vegetables. Stuff like that," she said.

Ellen DeGeneres on DOMA & Prop 8 Rulings: 'It's a Supremely Wonderful Day'

Ellen DeGeneres is so happy she could dance.

"It's a supremely wonderful day for equality," the talk show host Tweeted on Wednesday. "Prop 8 is over, and so is DOMA. Congratulations everyone. And I mean everyone."

The Supreme Court earlier handed a major victory for gay rights in two decisions. It cleared the way for the resumption of same-sex marriage in California by letting stand earlier court declarations that Proposition 8 was unconstitutional, and struck down the Defense of Marriage Act provision denying federal benefits to married gay couples.

REVIEW: Arrested Development Still Brings Laughs – But Something's Missing | Arrested Development, David Cross, Portia de Rossi

PEOPLE's TV Critic's Arrested Development Review: It's Just Not as Funny

Arrested Development, one of the cleverest sitcoms of all time, returned to life over the weekend, as Netflix launched an entire season of 15 new episodes for instant and, if one so chooses, marathon streaming.

This is a cause for celebration: reviving a cult network classic as digital, 24/7 programming is something like cloning a fresh mastodon from genetic material tweezered off a frozen carcass.

There is no guarantee, however, that the genetic material may not have mutated or deteriorated with time.

That is the case with Arrested Development, which lasted a mere three seasons on Fox despite ecstatic praise and is now regarded as such a classic that this revival has been wildly anticipated (and hyped).
