Virtually unknown in the U.S., Elmaleh, 42, was actually in Woody Allen's Oscar-winning Midnight in Paris, as the misguided Détective Tisserant.
Starting Friday, American audiences will have the opportunity to see him again, this time in his starring role in the financial thriller Capital, opposite Gabriel Byrne and directed by Oscar-winning French director Costa-Gavras.
Here are five things to know about the Moroccan-born celebrity, who recently sat down with PEOPLE.

When Monaco royal Andrea Casiraghi married heiress Tatiana Santo Domingo on Saturday, their wedding was unlike any other royal nuptials – the boho bride wore a simple garland of flowers in her tousled hair, instead of a crown.
New York-born Santo Domingo, 29, who has a 5-month-old son, Sacha, with the second-in-line to the throne, wore a full-length Missoni gown with three-quarter-length sleeves and opted for flat silver sandals instead of heels for the late-morning ceremony in the grounds of the Prince's Palace, Hello! magazine reports.

How does Princess Caroline of Monaco's husband thank her for testifying in court on his behalf? By taking his younger girlfriend on another very public holiday.
According to German press reports, Prince Ernst August of Hanover, whom Caroline defended last week in an appeal on an old assault charge, enjoyed this past weekend at the moneyed Austrian ski resort of Kitzbühel with his girlfriend – now regularly identified by news outlets as Moroccan publicity-event manager Myriam I., 41.
On Sunday, the couple ate schnitzels with potatoes and tomato salad at Rosi's Sonnbergstubn restaurant. Owner Rosi Schipflinger told Munich's Abendzeitung: "They enjoyed their meal very much and definitely want to come back."

With rumors swirling about the possible status of her marriage, Princess Caroline of Monaco dealt with her husband, Prince Ernst August of Hanover, in a German courtroom on Wednesday – and spoke up in his defense.
Barely a week after scandalous photos of Ernst August cavorting with another woman while on Christmas vacation in Thailand were published in Germany and France, the princess took the witness stand, where her appearance was considered key to Ernst August's appeal of his 2004 conviction for assault of Josef Brunlehner, owner of a disco near the prince's vacation home in Kenya.
At the time, the prince was convicted of hitting Brunlehner with a hard object because of Ernst August's displeasure with the disco's nightly music and light shows. Found guilty, Ernst August was fined more than $600,000 and charged with causing serious bodily harm.
The new case, with Princess Caroline's eyewitness testimony, is an attempt to reduce the severity of the conviction to a simple assault charge.

The already-tumultuous marriage of Monaco's Princess Caroline and husband Prince Ernst August of Hanover appears to have hit a new bump with the publication Thursday of photos showing the 55-year-old Ernst August over the Christmas holiday walking the sand, sunbathing on a beach in Thailand and kissing in the surf – all with someone other than his wife, who was skiing with the couple's children in Switzerland.
In a four-page photo spread headlined "Amorous Escapade in Thailand," Thursday's editions of France's Paris-Match show Ernst August and an unidentified woman locked in an embrace. "The Prince and his friend," the publication says, "only had eyes for each other." Meanwhile, Germany's Bunte also published the photos, declaring, "Monaco's First Lady Is Being Publically Duped."
The photos raise a new round of rumors concerning a possible divorce action by Lüneburg, 52, and Caroline, the daughter of the late Prince Rainier and Grace Kelly.
