The 1989 movie that helped make Julia Roberts a star is getting a makeover.
A new version of playwright Robert Harling's stage-to-screen dramedy Steel Magnolias is geared up as a Lifetime TV movie to air in the fall – but the cable network is already previewing the tear-jerker on its website. Watch the trailer below (and have the Kleenex ready).
This time, the women at the core of the Southern story, set in the fictional Louisiana town of Chinquapin, will be played by African Americans: Queen Latifah as M'Lynn, Alfre Woodard as Ouiser, Phylicia Rashad as Clairee, Adepero Oduye as Annelle, and Condola Rashad, the Tony-nominated, real-life daughter of Phylicia, as Shelby.

No Growing Pains here – Alan Thicke was happy to party with son Robin and his wife, Paula Patton, at New York's Avenue. Joined by Queen Latifah and a few other friends and family members, the trio arrived shortly after the Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol premiere, and according to onlookers, seemed to be having a fabulous time. Though Robin donned a white T-shirt and jeans, the rest of the group was dressed to the nines, and spent the night dancing, chatting and sipping vodka drinks – though Alan and Patton stuck to Perrier and Diet Coke. – Jennifer Garcia

Since she's a designer and a queen, it seems as if Queen Latifah is the perfect person to ask about the Middleton sisters' buzz-worthy style. So how would the star, whose clothing line debuts on HSN this weekend, dress the girls if given the chance?
"I wouldn't change a thing," she tells nymag.com's The Cut. "Pippa's still kind of up and coming to me – she should get to wear whatever she wants."
In fact, Latifah says the younger sis should be taking fashion risks. "It's the time to experiment with the kinds of things she wears," she explains. "Her sister's a princess so [she can't do that]."

Queen Latifah has some advice for Kate Middleton from one royal to another: Brace yourself.
"Make sure you have a sanctuary, because everybody in the world is going to be in your business," Latifah advises Middleton in the new issue of Parade. "[Prince William] happened to be born a prince; you happened to go to college and meet him. You're two kids who fell in love. I just hope you have a happy life."
Latifah's top tip for Middleton, who is set to marry William in April, is simple: "Don't take anything personally.”

A loving friend is someone to lean on, as Jada Pinkett Smith experienced first hand.
While presenting Queen Latifah with the Power Award at the third annual Essence Black Women in Hollywood luncheon, Pinkett Smith became choked up over the recent passing of her father, who succumbed to a heart attack.
"My father died last week, and I'm flying tomorrow to bury him," said Pinkett Smith, 38. "But I wanted to come because when those types of losses happen a lot of things get illuminated and your priorities fall in line."
