Despite her very public persona, Queen Latifah has long been private about her family life. But last spring as she was ramping up production for her syndicated daytime talk show, The Queen Latifah Show, the entertainer was taking on a personal commitment to take charge of her mother Rita Owens’s round-the-clock medical needs.
Owens, 64, was diagnosed last year with scleroderma, an incurable autoimmune disease that has caused scar tissue build up (pulmonary fibrosis) in her lungs. Owens also has pulmonary hypertension (blood pressure in the lungs), which impacts her ability to breathe.
“I wasn’t going to do the show unless she came here,” Latifah tells PEOPLE in its latest issue. “I knew she was dealing with her health issues sometimes and I would not be able to get to her as easily.”

As per usual, music's biggest night felt more like a concert-fashion show hybrid than an awards ceremony. The most famous faces in entertainment flocked to the Staples Center for Sunday's Grammy Awards to tip their hats (sometimes literally) to industry peers and drink in all of the action (out of the ultimate sippy cup, no less).

They all do. Equally.
Amid the musical acts set for Sunday night's Grammy Awards, the biggest showstopper of all may be the live, on-air wedding of 34 couples.
During Macklemore & Ryan Lewis's performance of their hit "Same Love" (for which they'll be joined by Madonna), diverse couples – including gay, straight, of different ages and races – will wed, the New York Times reports. And Queen Latifah will officiate.
The weddings "will be in our minds the ultimate statement of equality, that all the couples are entitled to the same exact thing," Lewis said.

The rumors are true: Kelly Rowland did get engaged recently – and it was quite the long-distance proposal!
Her boyfriend and manager Tim Weatherspoon popped the question over Skype while she was in Bulgaria, the singer and X Factor judge reveals in an interview airing Wednesday on The Queen Latifah Show, reports E! News.
"He put a ring on it," she says. "It's been a while," she adds of their relationship. "We've kept it very, very low – for years, to be completely honest."
