Rafael Nadal will not be competing in the London Olympics, he announced Thursday.
"I am not in condition to compete in the London Olympics and therefore will not travel as planned with the Spanish delegation to take part in the Games," he said in a statement to the Associated Press.
"I have to think about my companions, I can't be selfish and I have to think of what's best for Spanish sport, especially tennis and Spanish players, and give fellow sportsmen with better preparation the chance to compete."
Nadal – who won the men's singles gold medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics – has been battling knee problems for years. Still, he continued to prepare for the Olympics until as recently as this week.

Before he conquered Rafael Nadal on the Wimbledon Championships grass courts Sunday, Novak Djokovic beat out another worthy opponent: pizza.
The Serbian pro tennis player, 24, who secured his champion title with a 6-4, 6-1, 1-6, 6-3 win over Nadal, has cut out food containing gluten, including pizza, pasta and pretzels, from his diet.
Last year, Djokovic's nutritionist found out the athlete was allergic to the protein, which is found in common flours, reports The Wall Street Journal. Since, he says he feels much more confident on the court.

Are things getting muy caliente between Shakira and tennis star Rafael Nadal?
Last week, the pair was spotted sharing a cozy meal at the W Hotel in Barcelona, and the singer, 33, and the athlete, 23, get thisclose in Shakira's upcoming video for her song "Gypsy," premiering in April.
"They were giggling. They're very flirty," a source tells PEOPLE of the video shoot. "They had a lot of chemistry while they were filming."
Absent from the set to witness said chemistry? Shakira's longtime love Antonio de la Rua, and Maria Francisca Perello, whose relationship with Nadal went public last summer.

Tennis goes green for the next two weeks as Wimbledon starts on the lawn courts of London – and Venus Williams hopes she'll be able to claim her fifth women's title.
In fact, she says, last year's win gives her a slight mental edge.
"The advantage is that you won last year and it will never be taken away from you," Williams told reporters before the tournament began Monday. "It will always be yours, and you can hug the plate at night if it gets cold." (Venus's younger sister Serena has won the title twice. Together, they've also claimed the doubles title twice.)

Wimbledon is about to begin – but female fans of Rafael Nadal have one less reason to cheer this year.
Turns out the supposedly single tennis ace has a long-running love match with a girl from his hometown of Majorca. In fact, the 22-year-old has reportedly been dating Maria Francisca Perello for three years – and the two were recently photographed frolicking in the surf.
"My nephew always maintained he was single," the jock's trainer and uncle Toni Nadal tells Britain's Mail on Sunday. "It was a well-kept secret but actually his girlfriend is waiting for him in Majorca."
He added, "I guess a lot of girls will be upset to know the truth."
