Like peanut butter and jelly or, say, the Internet and cat videos, country music and major hair just go together.
And while today's crop of Nashville regulars put plenty of time (read: hairspray) into their dos, we'd really like to see these singers return to the genre's roots (pun intended).
Ahead of Wednesday's CMT Music Awards, we're playing stylist for the female video of the year nominees to imagine what they'd look like rocking the styles and, more importantly, hair of yesteryear.

Reba McEntire has spent much of the last 40 years on tour, but these days she's just as often hitting a different kind of road: the racetrack. Her son Shelby Blackstock is a rising star in the racing world who'll be competing on the Andretti Autosport team in the Pro Mazda Championship in Indianapolis on Saturday.
“He is having a ball and I go see him whenever I can,” the singer recently told a crowd of several hundred Nashville-area middle and high school students in the CMA Theater at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum.

We have many reasons to look forward to Thursdays each week (hello, one more day 'til the weekend) but let's be serious: The most important part of Thursdays is #tbt (that's Throwback Thursday), a.k.a. the day Reba McEntire posts amazing photos from her past. The hair! The sequins!

In her first public appearance since becoming Mrs. Brandon Blackstock two weeks ago, Kelly Clarkson radiated cheer and joy.
Then again, she was taping a Christmas TV special.
The former American Idol winner took the stage at the Las Vegas Venetian Wednesday night, belting out songs from her Wrapped in Red album, along with a few of her greatest hits.
At one point Clarkson spoke about how attractive an audience member was. When some shouted out that she was a newly married woman, the singer replied good-naturally, "I will hit on someone and make him jealous … I'm just kidding, I love my man."

Oklahoma's star contingent is showing its love for the victims of the recent deadly tornado that killed 24 people and injured 240.
Among the many generous showbiz names is Carrie Underwood, who on Thursday announced a $1 million donation to the Red Cross from her "Blown Away" tour's concert receipts.
"I have watched the devastation in my home state of Oklahoma over the past several days with great sadness," Underwood said in a statement. "With the help of my fans who attended my concerts over the past year, we can offer the Red Cross a little extra help in comforting those affected by the recent tornados."

Though his fellow country artists act as judges on reality TV, Jason Aldean's favorite kind of party is on an actual stage – not a sound stage.
"I never say never, but I just know doing that stuff takes away from being able to go out and play our shows," Aldean, named male vocalist of the year at Sunday's Academy of Country Music Awards, tells PEOPLE. "For me, if I'm not out on the road playing in front of people then I would be miserable."
That said, the singer, who's currently in the middle of his Night Train tour, doesn't hold it against his buddies Blake Shelton and Keith Urban for what they do on The Voice and American Idol.

What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas – usually.
