Abbie Cornish Discusses Early Romance with Ryan Phillippe

While she may be top-billed in the new movie Bright Star, Australian actress Abbie Cornish first rose to prominence in the U.S. two years ago, when she costarred in the real-life domestic drama involving the then-married Ryan Phillippe and Reese Witherspoon.
Cornish, now 27, and Phillippe, 34, met on the set of the movie Stop-Loss, and today they share a home in Los Angeles – "where it was love that brought me here, not work," she tells W magazine for its September issue. "I think the city feels and looks a little bit different because of that.”
While Witherspoon has publicly called divorce humiliating and isolating, Cornish – whom W says was "cast as the culprit" – looks back on the period when the spotlight first fell on her as "a really difficult time for me."

Reese Calls Divorce Humiliating and Isolating

At Reese Witherspoon's low point after her very public divorce from Ryan Phillippe, the actress found some efforts to console her far from helpful.
"When people get in your face and say, 'This will pass,' you think: Are they crazy?" Witherspooon, 32, tells the April issue of Elle. "I'm never gonna feel any better than I feel right this minute and nothing's ever gonna make sense again. And I still have moments where I'm like, 'Nothing's ever gonna make sense again.' "
But while she calls the split in 2006 "very humiliating and very isolating," Witherspoon came to realize, "If it's not painful, maybe it wasn't the right decision to marry to begin with. Those are the appropriate emotions."

• They're Down Under for the holidays – and Ryan Phillippe and Aussie girlfriend Abbie Cornish are busy blending in and running errands. The happy couple was spotted grocery shopping at an IGA supermarket at Lennox Head in Byron Bay, Australia. The pair have been relaxing in the northern vacation town before heading to Hunter Valley, in New South Wales, where Cornish's family lives.

Ryan Phillippe to Spend Christmas with the Cornishes

This Christmas will be a family affair for Ryan Phillippe and Abbie Cornish.
The couple are currently in Australia, where Phillippe will spend Christmas with Cornish’s family. Cornish landed in Sydney Dec. 7 and then greeted Phillippe at the airport on Sunday.
Cornish says she is excited to bring her boyfriend home for the holidays.
"It's wonderful!" she told reporters Tuesday at a Sydney party to promote Calvin Klein’s summer 2009 collection.

The holidays are approaching, and Reese Witherspoon – like countless divorced parents – will be sharing custody of her young children on those special days.
"I think the most important thing is to be a grownup," she says, "and not let any kind of feelings affect how you deal with your children."
For the mother-of-two – who finalized her divorce from Ryan Phillippe in June – that means having "a lot of communication" with her ex-husband and "just being very open."

Ryan Phillippe and Abbie Cornish, who only recently took their relationship public, are thriving as a couple, according to a friend.
"They're great," Rob Brown, Phillippe's pal and castmate in last spring's Stop-Loss, told PEOPLE last week at the Hollywood premiere of The Express. "I was with them last night. They're good people."
Phillippe, 33 and Cornish, 26, were rumored to have been dating for months but only attended their first major event as a couple in June, when he proudly accompanied her to the 2008 Australian in Film Breakthrough Awards.

Arriving in Las Vegas late Wednesday night, Ryan Phillippe and his Stop Loss costar and girlfriend Abbie Cornish hunkered down in a one-bedroom suite at The Palazzo Resort Hotel Casino as the couple celebrated Cornish's turning 26 – with Phillippe seemingly determined to make this her best birthday ever.
Starting the day lounging in a private cabana at Tao Beach, the duo dined on sushi and fruit before heading to the Canyon Ranch Spa for even more relaxation.
After taking in Cirque Du Soleil's O at Bellagio, Phillippe and Cornish were spotted walking hand in hand to dinner at an intimate corner table at Tao Las Vegas, where they were seen snuggling and kissing throughout the meal.

The casual duo enjoyed their sneak preview of the game, then turned their attention to the clothes in the store. According to a source, the couple acted lowkey but still "lovey-dovey."

Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Phillippe's divorce was finalized Thursday, Los Angeles court records show, indicating that financial and custody settlements have been reached.
Details weren't immediately available, however, the ex-couple have continually sought a shared custody arrangement over children Ava, 8, and Deacon, 4.
The documents, dated June 12, only read: "[The court finds] the parties have settled all their remaining issues in these proceedings."
Witherspoon is currently dating Jake Gyllenhaal, while Phillippe, 33, recently stepped out with Australian actress Abbie Cornish, 25.

After months of speculation about their relationship, he proudly accompanied his Stop-Loss costar Abbie Cornish to the 2008 Australian in Film Breakthrough Awards – their first major event as a couple.
"They were adorable," says a guest. "He had his arm around her and they were cozy and comfortable."
