Accustomed to surprises from her time on The Biggest Loser, Stephanie Anderson recently received a completely unwelcome one from her husband of one year, fellow show alum Sam Poueu.
As the couple prepared for the birth of their first child, a boy due in July, "Stephanie felt they weren't connecting and decided they should go to counseling," a source close to the situation tells PEOPLE. "It was getting dire."
Finally the truth came out, and it stunned Anderson.

Biggest Loser stars Sam Poueu and Stephanie Anderson have separated – two months before their first child is due.
"It is with great sadness that my marriage to Sam Poueu is ending," Anderson tells PEOPLE in an exclusive statement. "Thank you in advance for respecting our privacy during this difficult time."
The two, who met on the hit NBC show's season 9 and wed in April 2012, are in the process of divorcing – but no papers have been filed yet.

After a tragic accident and many difficult months, two former Biggest Loser contestants were able to relish a day devoted to celebration.
Sam Poueu, 27, and Stephanie Anderson, 32, exchanged vows at Saint Paul's Catholic Church in San Francisco on Saturday, PEOPLE confirms.
The bride wore a gown from White by Vera Wang from David's Bridal that she described on her wedding website as "meant for me." Stepping into it for the first time, she said she "wept tears of excitement, relief, joy and I felt like the most beautiful woman."

After getting sidetracked by a terrible accident last year, the big day is almost here for two popular former Biggest Loser contestants.
Sam Poueu and Stephanie Anderson will finally tie the knot this Saturday in San Francisco, more than seven months after he almost died after falling four stories from a building in San Francisco.
"With what has happened over the last 7 months, we've had to refocus our energy and time," the couple write on their wedding website. "Now here we are just a short time away from our BIG day and we cannot be more anxious and excited to join together as husband and wife."

Sam Poueu has taken the next step on his road to recovery.
The season 9 Biggest Loser contestant, who was critically injured when he fell from the roof of a four-story apartment building in San Francisco on Sept. 3, has transferred to a rehabilitation facility, his family tells PEOPLE.
"He is undergoing an intense rehabilitation schedule. His recovery has been nothing short of a miracle," the family, along with his fiancée Stephanie Anderson, say in a statement. "He has been blessed with a wonderful medical team."
Poueu, 25, meanwhile, is staying positive in this next phase of treatment.
