Heidi Klum Files for Divorce from Seal

Nearly three months after announcing their separation following almost seven years of marriage, Heidi Klum has made it official and filed for divorce from Seal, PEOPLE has learned.
A petition, which lists irreconcilable differences as the reason for the split, was filed Friday afternoon in Los Angeles Superior Court, PEOPLE confirms.
Klum is seeking joint legal custody, but primary physical custody of their four children – Leni, 7½, Henry, 6½, Johan, 5, and Lou, 2 – with visitation rights for Seal. The model is also requesting to have her maiden name restored. She legally changed it to Seal's last name, Samuel, though professionally she continued to use Klum.

The last few months haven't been easy for Heidi Klum, who split from Seal, her husband of seven years, in January. But she's trying her best to keep her head up.
"I feel like I'm in the eye of a tornado," she tells Elle in its April issue. "Sometimes I think a curve ball just comes at you. Instead of something straight that you can catch, it hits you in the head from the side that you didn't expect."
Klum, 38, understands that the couple's separation seemed sudden – but she tells the magazine that things in her marriage with the singer, 49, weren't always what they seemed.

Seal has been very candid about the demise of his marriage to Heidi Klum – and now he's defending his decision to speak so openly about the subject.
"When you publicize your marriage as much as our marriage was publicized, when you renew wedding vows, when you do all those things, what you are saying to people is ... you're giving people a picture of an ideal relationship that people aspire to," the singer said on the Fifi and Jules radio show in Australia, where he's working on that country's version of The Voice and performing his "Soul 2" tour.
Seal, who turned 49 last weekend, says that he felt an obligation to give the public a window into why his marriage ended because he and Klum had been so open about their relationship in happier times.

As Seal turns 49 on Sunday, it seems unlikely that Heidi Klum will be celebrating by his side.
Multiple sources tell PEOPLE that although the couple originally hoped to reconcile, a reunion might not be in their future after all.
"They had both been wearing their wedding rings and had mutually thought they might be able to work it out," one source says. "But it doesn't look like it's going that way."

And that would be Klum, 38, who was spotted still wearing her ring on Tuesday as she headed into the BOA Steakhouse in Los Angeles.
Meanwhile, Seal, 48, was seen arriving in Australia on Thursday, minus his estranged wife and their children, without a wedding band – but sporting some funky yellow nail polish.

Heidi Klum has broken her silence since she and Seal announced their separation last week.
The supermodel, 38, who hadn't Tweeted since Jan. 15, acknowledged those who have helped her so far through the split from her husband, 48, of nearly seven years.

Seal isn't the only one wearing his wedding ring post-split. Heidi Klum was spotted in Los Angeles Wednesday with a gold band around her ring finger.
The singer and supermodel, who married in Mexico in 2005, announced their "amicable" separation on Sunday.
Since the shocking news broke, Seal has made several appearances to promote his new collection of covers, Soul 2, and spoke about the end of their marriage.
"In terms of our love and respect for each other, it hasn't changed at all," he says in an interview airing Friday on Tavis Smiley on PBS.

Despite the very real "problems" behind the separation from his wife of almost seven years, Heidi Klum, Seal still doesn't rule out chances they'll get back together.
"It may happen, I can't speak for her," Seal, 48, says on Piers Morgan Tonight. "Is it irreparable? You can never say never. The thing I love most about us is that we are a team … that won't change, whether we get back together or not."
For now, though, the British musician, who is still wearing his wedding ring, sticks by the couple's mutual decision to part ways.

"They were just really great at keeping it private and putting on that 'perfect couple' front that everyone expected," says a Klum pal. But "it's actually been about six months that they've been working through some issues."
"It was a crazy love affair with highs and lows," says a source close to the couple, known for their over-the-top romantic gestures and lavish anniversary parties. "Most people can't sustain the highs when they're that extreme."
