Smokey Robinson wants to collaborate with Justin Bieber – just not necessarily in the recording studio.
As the 20-year-old pop star awaits trial following a January DUI arrest, the legendary Robinson says he'd like to share some of the wisdom he's learned along the way.
"I know Justin pretty good," Robinson, 74, tells PEOPLE at the 56th Annual Thalians Gala in Los Angeles. "But I would love to sit him in a room somewhere and talk with him for an hour just one on one."
Robinson, who was honored at the event alongside wounded veterans, pointed out the current influences in Bieber's life.

When Motown: The Musical begins performances on Broadway March 11, Michael Jackson won't be there only in spirit.
The King of Pop will be right on stage – portrayed by an actor, as will several of the other big-name powerhouses from the fabled Detroit hit factory: Diana Ross and the Supremes, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, the Temptations, Smokey Robinson and their '60s record label's founder, Berry Gordy. (They can all be seen in a first-look video clip of the show, exclusive to PEOPLE.com.)

Recovering at home from her recent surgery, Aretha Franklin says she's up and about – and feeling better, too.
"I feel great," she tells JET in a new interview, adding that doctors want her to recuperate for eight weeks. "The doctors say I can do whatever I feel like I am up to do. Of course, that doesn't mean any concerts or anything like that. But I can do things around the house, and today I am just piddling around the house."
The singer, 68, still has not revealed the nature of her ailment, though she's been reported to have pancreatic cancer. She promises the magazine that she will speak out on what's ailing her soon. "I am putting Aretha together first," she adds. "I will talk more later."
