Star Jones returned to The View Wednesday – her first visit to the ABC talk show since her much talked-about departure in June 2006.
"It was ugly. Everything. It was a bad emotional time. Nasty things were being said in the media," Jones said after her former boss, Barbara Walters, insisted on discussing her exit, when the host abruptly announced she was leaving on the air, then revealed she had been fired by the show.
"I wanted to go out on my own terms so that if I walked back here I'd feel good about it," Jones continued. "I had eight fantastic years here. One was 'eh.' I came back to congratulate you on all you accomplished. I hope you congratulate me on what I accomplished."

She was the the reason she quit Celebrity Apprentice, but that isn't stopping NeNe Leakes from keeping it cordial with former fellow contestant Star Jones.
"Saying hello costs me nothing – that's free," the Real Housewives of Atlanta star, 43, tells ESSENCE.com. "I'm not so in a rage that I can't say hello and I can't stand in the same room as Star."
The two famously feuded and resorted to name-calling on the NBC show, and their rivalry hit a peak when Leakes unloaded on Jones in front of a client.

NeNe Leakes never had second thoughts about quitting Celebrity Apprentice. It all just got to be too much, she says.
"I don't regret it. I felt very good about it. I always do what my gut tells me to do," the Real Housewives of Atlanta star says in an interview airing Wednesday on The Ellen DeGeneres Show.
She adds: "I'm a grown woman, and nobody makes decisions for me. I make my own decisions. It was a toxic situation for me."

The last time the Real Housewives of Atlanta star NeNe Leakes sat down to talk with Ellen DeGeneres, she called fellow Celebrity Apprentice contestant Star Jones "a disaster." After Sunday night's vicious spat between the contestants, Jones appeared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show – and she didn't miss her chance to strike back.
"What were you thinking when NeNe was going off like that?" DeGeneres asks Jones in an episode airing Tuesday.
"I was thinking my grandmother is going to watch this," Jones says. "I was thinking I need to keep calm."
She also couldn't resist comparing her costar to a feral animal. "When you're confronted in the wild with an un-caged animal you're supposed to retreat," Jones says. "You're not supposed to attack."

Talk about cold comfort.
Star Jones is recovering from last week's cardiac surgery with the help of her fans – and a simple frozen pleasure.
"Thank you for all the good wishes and prayers … I feel them all," the former View co-host Tweets. By the way … who knew that ice chips could taste like steak!"
Jones, who turns 48 on Wednesday, had a heart procedure March 17 related to surgery she had 30 years ago to remove a thoracic tumor. Her rep told PEOPLE over the weekend that the operation had been a success and Jones was recovering well.

Star Jones underwent cardiac surgery Wednesday related to rarely-performed surgery she had three decades ago after developing a thoracic tumor.
In a statement to PEOPLE, a rep for the television personality confirmed the procedure. "On Wednesday, March 17th, a pre-planned cardiac surgery was performed on Star Jones," the statement read. "This recent surgery is a follow-up to the thoracic surgery she had 30 years ago. The procedure was successful and she is recovering well with her family. Star is grateful for everyone’s thoughts and prayers."
In August 2003, Jones, 47, underwent gastric bypass surgery and subsequently lost 160 lbs. Her recent cardiac surgery comes just days before her 48th birthday on March 24.

She may have shed 160 pounds, but Star Jones's self image has yet to catch up with her new body.
"I'm still 300 lbs. in my head some days," the lawyer and TV personality, 47, tells Oprah Winfrey on Wednesday's Oprah.
Sharing the stage with well-known dieters Marie Osmond, who dropped 46 pounds from her 5'5" frame, and bikinied PEOPLE cover girl Valerie Bertinelli, Jones for the first time discusses her controversial gastric-bypass surgery and her bumpy exit from The View.
Admitting that, even now, talking about her body with Winfrey leaves her "a little off kilter," Jones says, "I was a little late getting up [today], and I'm always up at 6:00 a.m. But I realized that we were gonna talk about this and it scared me a bit."
