While John Hughes's The Breakfast Club, Ferris Bueller's Day Off and Home Alone proved to be both box-office powerhouses as well as culturally significant landmarks, his sudden death from a heart attack Thursday is proving equally noteworthy, for the shockwaves it is sending throughout the acting community that he helped to launch.
Known as the "Brat Pack" – a term coined in a 1985 New York magazine feature on the then-rising Hughes and the cast of his coming-of-age comedies – the writer-director-producer's stable of fresh-faced performers included such now-household names as Sean Penn, Steve Carell, Macaulay Culkin, Matthew Broderick, Jon Cryer, Charlie Sheen, Molly Ringwald, John Cusack, Emilio Estevez, Andrew McCarthy, Anthony Michael Hall and Ally Sheedy, among others.
While Pretty in Pink star Ringwald recalled Hughes, 59, as "an important part of my life," and Ferris Bueller himself, Broderick, considered him "my friend," others remember the filmmaker as follows:

The latest musician to grace the stage at the Grand Ole Opry? None other than country music star ... Steve Martin?
The Emmy Award-winning actor, comedian and writer will perform songs from his first music album The Crow – New Songs for the Five-String Banjo, which was released Tuesday. And he won't go it alone: Martin will be joined onstage by an all-star band including Vince Gill and Amy Grant.
But Martin's banjo picking is no fad – his good friend John McEuen (who produced the album) says of Martin and the upcoming gig, "The audience will find out he's a musician disguised as an actor."

In case you missed it, Martin Short appeared on David Letterman's Late Show this week, and the TV host presented Short with a recent PEOPLE.com photo of the comic and Steve Martin, both in their bathing suits, splashing about in the waters of the Caribbean. (Their "bromance" followed that of Owen Wilson and Woody Harrelson.)
"What are you inferring?" asked Short. "I don't want to embarrass you," Letterman replied, and Short clarified: "We're good friends. We vacation together. We've been known to bathe together."

Another "Bromance" blooms, with longtime pals Steve Martin and Martin Short (right) enjoying their Baywatch moment together on St. Bart's in the Caribbean, splashing around just like buddies Woody Harrelson and Owen Wilson (left) were also doing this month in Hawaii. Back in 1983, Martin and Short starred together (with Chevy Chase) in Three Amigos. So, where's the third?

RANKED: Though it's often claimed that Teri Hatcher gets all the attention, Eva Longoria is the only star of Desperate Housewives to make Maxim magazine's new Hot 100 list – in fact, Longoria is No. 1. "It's kind of exciting and shocking all at the same time, because I was No. 91 last year," Longoria, 30, tells USA Today. "Considering all the women in the world, No. 91 isn't all that bad. But I didn't go to the party (last year), because I don't think anyone wants the 90s at the party." Modest about her status this year as well, Longoria tells that paper that she'd rank Angelina Jolie (whom the men's magazine ranked as No. 7) at the top of the list. "Angelina is the definition of sexy," Longoria says. "Everything about her is sexy – her empowerment, confidence, strength, beauty, character, her morals and what she stands for."
