Steven Tyler Says He Needed to Kick Pain and Sleep Drugs

Originally posted 06/27/2008 09:45PM

Expanding upon an earlier explanation that foot-surgery recuperation forced him into rehab, Aerosmith rocker Steven Tyler now says he required the "safe environment" of a treatment facility in order to address a dependency on pain and sleep medication.

"To have your feet done, to have your leg done, you have to be on narcotics," Tyler, 60, told the Associated Press on Friday. "You have to be on sleep aids at night. I don't know about Joe [Perry, an Aerosmith bandmate], but I was off and running and I didn't like the me that was me."

Tyler – who successfully went through rehab in 1986 after years of admitted drug and alcohol abuse – issued a statement in May, saying he'd gone into rehab that month to recover from foot surgeries to repair problems caused by his highly physical stage moves.

"This was a month ago," he said Friday, "so I just put the brakes on and checked into detox and just pulled the plug on all of it."

Okay, so it wasn't quite like Los Angeles. But the stars still turned out in force for game six of the Lakers-Celtics championship series in Boston Tuesday night.

And it's a good thing, too, because the Bean Town boys put away Kobe and Co. in a 131-92 rout – becoming the new NBA Champions.

Hometown boy Donnie Wahlberg – who predicted the victory to PEOPLE last week – pulled buddy Joey McIntyre onto the court for some post-game revelry.

Steven Tyler: I Went to Rehab for Foot Surgery

Originally posted 05/29/2008 07:00PM

Aerosmith rocker Steven Tyler says he checked into to a rehab facility earlier this month to recover from foot surgeries to repair problems caused by his stage moves.

"The doctors told me the pain in my feet could be corrected but it would require a few surgeries over time," Tyler says in a statement released Thursday. "The 'foot repair' pain was intense, greater than I'd anticipated. The months of rehabilitative care and the painful strain of physical therapy were traumatic. I really needed a safe environment to recuperate where I could shut off my phone and get back on my feet. Make no mistake, Aerosmith has no plans to stop rocking. There's a new album to record, then another tour."

According to the statement, Tyler was treated at the center after a series of surgeries and post-operative physical therapy "to correct long-time foot injuries resulting from his trademark athletic performance onstage."

The statement follows reports the 60-year-old singer was being treated instead for substance abuse.

Steven Tyler: Rockin' Grandpa-to-Be

Originally posted 10/12/2004 06:00AM

It's hard to imagine Aerosmith rocker Steven Tyler – he of the long scarves, tight spandex and distinctive yodeling "y-y-yeahs" – as a grandpa. But with daughter Liv Tyler expecting her first baby (with rocker hubby Royston Langdon) in December, he will be just that. So we just had to ask – what is that like for him? "It's going to be the greatest present that I ever got for Christmas," Tyler told us at the Fifth Annual Celebrity Hat Trick event in Boston, a fund-raiser for Denis Leary's Firefighters Foundation. "What a beautiful thing under the tree, you know? I'm looking forward to it." And what kind of grandpa will he be? "Oh God. I'm going to teach it to fish and just everything. It's funny, I've not slowed down yet, but I'm really looking forward to holding (Liv's) baby in my arms and loving it." Luckily, he doesn't have to wonder what to buy for the little one. "There's a line of clothing with 'Walk This Way' and 'Dream On' and all that I brought her last week," he told us. "Some company out of L.A. is doing them, and they called and asked if we would be all right with it. I looked at (the clothes) and I went, 'Oh my God. Liv's having this baby, of course I'm all right with it.'" (In case you have a rock 'n' roll baby to buy for: The company is Tappin Toes.)
