FIRST LISTEN: Terrence Howard's Album Debut

Originally posted 06/17/2008 11:15AM

PEOPLE is giving you a sneak preview of Oscar-nominee Terrence Howard's debut album, Terrence Howard – Me and the Band of Kings, before it hits stores September 2.

The album, the actor's first foray into music, is a mix of soft pop-rock and jazzy tunes that Howard wrote (or co-wrote) about love, relationships and self reflection, and even features Howard playing the guitar on some tracks.

"Music has always been the road that leads to where I'm headed. Film is my vocation, my 9 to 5. In the movies, I'm doing what somebody else is asking me to do," Howard explains. "Music is my own personal form of expression. My responsibility, like the sun's, is to shine. Even if the planet is covered with clouds, I must say what I have to say."

Terrence Howard Debuts His Album at Listening Session

Originally posted 04/21/2008 06:00PM

In a page out of Hustle and Flow, Academy Award-nominated star Terrence Howard hosted a lunchtime listening session Monday for his debut album: Terrence Howard – Me and the Band of Kings.

Howard, dapper in a three piece gray suit, drummed his chopsticks along to the 11-song disc as it played for a room full of journalists at the Sony Club in New York. The album chronicles everything from broken relationships on "It's All Game" to self-reflection on "Plenty" and the celebration of love on his single, "Love Makes You Beautiful."

Howard told the audience that he began writing songs at age 16 in his "rainbow colored notebook," and discussed recording an "emotionally sobering" song that began as a letter to his ex-wife. The collection of songs is highly reminiscent of a live, big band, jazz feel, which Howard backs up by playing the guitar.

The album is currently slated for a September release.

Talk about the cat's meow: Terrence Howard is coming to Broadway, to star with Dreamgirls' Anika Noni Rose in a revival of Tennessee Williams' dramatic classic Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, a rep for the show tells PEOPLE.

The 1955 Tony-winning play was turned into a 1958 movie starring Paul Newman, as Brick, and Elizabeth Taylor, as Maggie the Cat – whose marriage to the alcoholic Brick, a former school football hero Down South, is crumbling.

The new production, set to open Feb. 12 at the Broadhurst Theatre, will also star James Earl Jones, as Big Daddy, and Phylicia Rashad, as Big Mama, and be directed by Rashad's sister, Debbie Allen.

Desperate Housewives star James Denton had to get the thumbs-up from one important woman before he agreed to host the 2006 Miss America pageant: his wife, Erin.
