Everywhere Tiger Woods goes, he draws a huge crowd. While recently promoting his video game, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10, he saw firsthand how crazy the throng could be. "This is abnormal," he confided to PEOPLE after navigating through a sea of fans who were trying to give him high-fives and snapping his picture. "Everything else about my life is very normal. I do the same things everyone else does."

(Note to Tiger: "Everyone else" doesn't play video golf with Jimmy Fallon in Times Square, backing up traffic and drawing more than a thousand screaming fans.)

In a rare quiet moment, Woods sat down with PEOPLE for a candid interview to discuss family and fatherhood, including the lessons he learned from his late dad, Earl Woods, who died of cancer in 2006.

Tiger Woods just got beaten at his own game.

Although his face is on the box of the Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10 video game, the golf pro showed that he's not the best player in the world – at least when it comes to the Wii. To promote the game, Woods played Jimmy Fallon in a three-hole showdown Thursday. Every stroke was shown on several huge video screens in Times Square, meaning thousands of New Yorkers had the opportunity to see Woods lose badly. ("You really stink," Fallon said to Woods right before the golfer conceded the game.)

But Woods was gracious in defeat. "Jimmy was far better than I thought," he told PEOPLE afterwards. "I heard that he's been playing quite a bit, so I knew he was going to be pretty good, but I didn't think he'd be that good."

Make no mistake about it: Tiger Woods is eager to return to the golf course after being sidelined for eight months with a knee injury. He's ready to feel what he calls "that rush of playing and competing."

But the PGA superstar, who plays Wednesday at the WGC Accenture Match Play Championship in Marana, Ariz., says he found unexpected joys in being home with wife Elin, daughter Sam, 2, and newborn son Charlie Axel Woods.

"It was a blessing in disguise to have an opportunity just to see Sam grow that fast and that much," he said at a news conference Tuesday. "As players, you travel so much that I would have missed a lot of that, so I was very lucky there."

He says it himself: Tiger Woods is going to have one hectic spring.

Woods, 33, hasn't played competitive golf since undergoing knee surgery in June, and says that his return to the tour hinges on the birth of his second child with wife Elin Nordegren.

"A lot depends on the baby, which is due pretty soon," Woods, who admits to going "full-bore" in practice sessions, writes on his Web site. "That takes precedent over anything I do golf-wise."

"Elin and I are proud to announce that we are expecting our second child in late winter," the golf champ wrote on his official Web site Tuesday.

"This has been a year of contrasts," Woods, 32, began. "I had a solid start to the season, won the U.S. Open in an exciting playoff, and then unfortunately had to shut it down after successful knee surgery."

Michael Phelps may be the toast of the town. But even with eight gold medals, he still wasn't the most famous athlete an EA Sports-sponsored party in Manhattan Wednesday night.

No, that distinction belonged to Tiger Woods, there to promote his new video game, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 09.

The golfing great – who's recuperating from a serious knee injury – kept a low profile at the bash, immediately heading upstairs to a private suite. But he did take time to chat with the history-making super-swimmer.

"Michael Phelps did visit Tiger upstairs," an event rep told PEOPLE. "No one gets in that room unless Tiger wants them there."

Bad Knee Forces Tiger Woods to Retire – For Now

Originally posted 08/13/2008 11:10AM

A knee injury is forcing Tiger Woods to hang up his clubs until 2009 – and he's not betting when he'll return to the world of competitive golf.

"As far as swinging a club, that's not going to happen until next year. I just don't have a choice," the world's No. 1 player, 32, said Tuesday in a message on his Web site.

"We simply don't know what type of swelling there would be or if there would be any residual effects the next day once you start wheeling and dealing on the knee," he states.

Tiger Woods Calls Daughter the 'Greatest Thing in the World'

Talk about the best Father's Day ever! Not only did Tiger Woods tie Rocco Mediate on Sunday – then win on the nineteenth hole of a sudden death playoff in the U.S. Open Monday – but he also had his adorable daughter Sam and wife Elin standing by to celebrate his win.

After his historic (and close) victory in San Diego, following months of knee troubles, Woods said, "There's no way I could have gotten through this without Sam being there ... just watching her grow, walking, running now, it's been just the greatest thing in the world."

It was the first time Sam, who turns one on Wednesday, attended the Open.

The last time Woods won was in 2002, when his father was still alive.
