Tom Cruise's recent Oprah Winfrey interview included several new revelations – like admitting that he regrets his infamous argument with Matt Lauer.

Unfortunately, the Today show host tells PEOPLE, he didn't get to watch Winfrey's two-hour Cruise-a-palooza.

"I was traveling," he said on his way into a N.Y.C. dinner celebrating Time magazine's Most Influential People in the World issue on Thursday night. "I didn't see the interview. Somebody told me a little bit."

The starring role in the fourth installment of Mission Impossible is Tom Cruise's – should be choose to accept it.

In a news conference in Seoul, media mogul Sumner Redstone, who once famously severed his relationship with the actor, said Tuesday he'd support casting him in the action franchise once again.

"I consider Tom Cruise a great actor and a good friend," the Viacom chief told reporters. "And if Paramount decides – and they will make the decision – to move ahead with him, I will not object."

On the show, Winfrey gifted audience members with a box set of the actor's flicks, and showed off choice clips from his movies while the actor recounted his career. "I feel at home on that movie set," he told Winfrey. "A lot of times I show up before the crew. And I feel this is what I'm supposed to do."

And his friends concur.

Throughout the show, former costars like Will Smith, Renée Zellweger and friends David and Victoria Beckham recorded sweet and funny tributes. Here are some of the top moments:

Tom Cruise and Oprah Winfrey are sitting down to talk – but this time it's on his couch.

In the first part of a two-part interview, Winfrey visits Cruise in his Telluride, Colo. home – and talk inevitably turns to the actor's now-infamous couch jumping incident from 2005.

"[It] was a moment, and it was real," Cruise says about his animated profession of love for Katie Holmes, in the interview to air on Friday. "I just felt that way, and I feel that way about her," he continues. "I can't even articulate it, to be honest. That feeling, that connection. Just who she is and what she means to me."

In what sounds like a real-life, all-star version of The Graduate, Cher is now admitting to having acted upon a long-ago crush on the much younger Tom Cruise.

Their happy time together took place just as Cruise, now 45, was kicking off his career 25 years ago, the 61-year-old diva tells Oprah Winfrey for an upcoming show taped in Las Vegas.

"I was so crazy about him," says Cher, who was 39 when she reportedly met the 23-year-old Cruise at a White House fund-raiser in the mid-'80s, not long after his breakthrough role in 1983's Risky Business.

Following in his parents' footsteps, Connor Cruise will make his film debut in the upcoming Will Smith drama Seven Pounds, PEOPLE has learned.

Connor, 13 – who has grown up around movie sets with mom Nicole Kidman and dad Tom Cruise – will play a young version of Smith in a very minor role. Even with such famous acting mentors in his corner, Connor had to audition for the part.

"Tom is so proud of Connor," says a source. "He's proud of him for really doing this on his own."

The Columbia Pictures film, which is still in production, also costars Woody Harrelson and Rosario Dawson.

Revealed: More Details on Tom Cruise's Cameo in Tropic Thunder

Originally posted 04/03/2008 01:15PM

There's a surprise coming in Ben Stiller's next movie, Tropic Thunder: Tom Cruise, as he's never been seen before.

Rather than play his typical, boyishly charming good guy, Cruise delivers an apparently memorable cameo in which he's craggy, fat, bald, vulgar, hairy-chested – and playing an ungrateful studio boss, reports The New York Times, which also says that Cruise's opening line in the movie comedy is enough to guarantee it an R-rating when it opens Aug. 15.

The Times points out that Tropic Thunder is a Paramount Picture: Paradoxically, in August 2006 Cruise was famously fired from Paramount by its parent-company chief Sumner Redstone, despite the star's having made such big hits for the studio as 1984's Top Gun and the Mission: Impossible series.
