Tom Cruise's Mom in Risky Business Dies at 71

Janet Carroll, who played Tom Cruise's oblivious mother in the movie Risky Business, died Tuesday at 71.
The Chicago-born actress, who had a long career in movies and television, died in New York after a lengthy illness, Variety reports.
Playing a mother unaware that her son was running a brothel in her own home while she was out of town, Carroll made her movie premiere in the 1983 film that launched Cruise to superstardom.

In order to portray rock god Stacee Jaxx, Tom Cruise had to go wild – literally.
"After working for weeks on Stacee's technical skills, I was thinking about the character, and I said, 'You know what? I need a monkey,'" the Rock of Ages star tells W Magazine. "[Director Adam Shankman] said, 'What the f– are you talking about?' And I said, 'I'm serious – I need a monkey.'"

Tom Cruise, who hits the half-century mark in July, sat down for a candid and lengthy Q&A that appears in the magazine's June issue, on newsstands May 18. PEOPLE has been provided an exclusive first look.
Asked why he "sued over some particularly personal things that have been written about you and your family," Cruise tells Playboy, "They know I mean it, that if I have to, I will sue."
He also says, "Does refuting things help? Not really. There comes a point when you just have to go, 'You know what? Here's how I've lived my life: I've never been late to a set. I make films I believe in. I feel privileged to be able to do what I love.' You just have to keep going and remember that."

Like Alice herself, Suri Cruise spent the day in wonderland on Wednesday, as her dad Tom Cruise treated her to an outing at Disneyland – including a spin in the Mad Tea Party.
Sporting a purple dress and a pink top with white polka dots, Suri, who'll be 6 in April, found time to get pink-and-purple face paint in a swirling design around her eyes.
There was no sign of mom Katie Holmes, but Tom, 49, looked relaxed and happy, in jeans and a blue-and-white striped T-shirt, as he enjoyed the father-daughter bonding time at the Anaheim, Calif., resort.
Last month, Suri and her mom hit up an east coast kids' hot spot: FAO Schwarz.

Frencher – who is in his early twenties and was born in Beverly Hills, Calif., – is interested in performing just like Bella's famous parents Cruise and Nicole Kidman. He's an indie musician and is a member of the group ae (pronounced "ay"), with band mate Adam Cude.

Connor Cruise, the son of Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman, celebrated his 17th birthday with a charity bash at the Staples Center in Los Angeles this week – but it was his sister, Isabella, who made news.
Bella, 19, introduced her date Eddie Frencher, who is in his early 20s, as her "boyfriend" at the party, where aspiring deejay Connor spun records in the Hyde Lounge and played Just Dance 3 with friends and his big sis.
"They were together the whole night," a guest at the party tells PEOPLE of Bella and Eddie. "They were sitting together watching the game and sang 'Happy Birthday' to Connor standing side by side."

The talented teen, who DJs on the side, spun records at the party as his guests – including the Winklevoss twins – watched the Clippers vs. Mavericks basketball game and played the video game Just Dance 3, which raised money for the Children's Miracle Network Hospitals. The parties just don't stop for Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes this holiday season. The couple celebrated their five-year anniversary last month and her 33rd birthday on Dec. 18.
"Every day I fall more in love with her," Cruise, 49, told PEOPLE at the New York premiere of Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol on Monday at the Ziegfeld Theatre. "It's been quite an amazing five years because of her. She's an incredible woman. She's everything to me."
To mark her birthday, the couple enjoyed a Big Apple tradition at the Radio City Christmas Spectacular starring The Rockettes with daughter Suri, 5, and her grandparents, Kathleen and Martin Holmes.
