Grammy Awards Pay Tribute to Whitney Houston, Etta James
Originally posted 02/13/2012 02:30PM
On a night intended to pay homage to the biggest names in music today, two of the Grammy
Awards's biggest honorees were the megastars no longer in the room: Etta James and Whitney Houston.
After host LL Cool J opened Sunday's ceremony with a prayer for Houston, announcing "a death in our family," the audience rose in a standing ovation.
"When a truly great artist leaves us, their legacy lives on," Alicia Keys later told the stars gathered at Los Angeles's Staples Center, before joining Bonnie Raitt in a graceful cover of James's "A Sunday Kind of Love."
But the most moving tribute came from Jennifer Hudson, whose elegant but understated rendition of Houston's "I Will Always Love You" brought audience members to their feet once again.

Alec Baldwin Explains Why He Skipped the Emmys
Originally posted 09/19/2011 07:30AM
It was a birthday party that kept Emmy nominee Alec Baldwin away from TV's biggest night, not the fact that his opening skit got cut, he says.
"I didn't skip the Emmys because of that," the 30 Rock star told reporters Sunday at singing legend Tony Bennett's 85th birthday gala in New York. "I skipped the Emmys because of this – because I wanted to be here."
Baldwin, 53, says he agreed to host the gala a year ago, long before the awards show was scheduled. "The Emmys have been in August for the last several years, but they moved to this date and I'd already committed to this."

Wednesday would have been the 28th birthday of Amy Winehouse.
To mark the day, the song "Body and Soul" – which Winehouse recorded as a duet with Tony Bennett a few months before she was found found dead on July 23 – is being released, with proceeds from sale going to the Amy Winehouse Foundation established by her family, "to support charities and organisations undertaking charitable activities in both the United Kingdom and abroad who help, support, or care for young people," according to a statement.
On the foundation's website a good-humored Amy can be seen in a clip, noting that the song is her father Mitch's favorite. She also jokes about meeting Bennett – "Can I call him 'Tone'?" she asks.

Yes, the biggest jaw-dropper of the MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday happened on the black carpet before the show even began: Beyoncé's baby bump reveal. But that was hardly the only surprise of the famously unpredictable show.
Among the night's big winners: Katy Perry, who scored three Moon Men – her first-ever – including Video of the Year for "Firework;" British soul singer Adele, who won three trophies for her mega-hit "Rolling in the Deep" (and received a standing ovation for her stunning live performance of "Someone Like You"); and Justin Bieber for Best Male Video ("U Smile").
A rundown of the night's other buzz-worthy moments:

But the night belonged to Scotty McCreery, who took home the Idol crown.
"It was just a moment I will never forget," said McCreery, 17, of his win. "This was all about me being able to accomplish my dreams. I'm an American Idol. That was a huge dream. It's time for me to start my career. The real work begins."

Barack Obama to Honor His Musical Hero, Stevie Wonder
Originally posted 02/24/2009 10:15AM
During Barack Obama's presidential campaign, Stevie Wonder honored him in song at rallies and fundraisers. Now the President is returning the favor to the artist he's called his musical hero.
On Wednesday, Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama will present Wonder, 58, with the Library of Congress's Gershwin Prize for Popular Song.
The salute, to be held in the White House's East Room and broadcast Thursday night on PBS, will feature artists including Martina McBride (who will sing Wonder's hit "You and I"), Will.I.Am, Tony Bennett, Paul Simon and India.Arie.
Obama last year told Rolling Stone that he really got into music during Wonder's heyday in the early '70s, when Wonder released albums like Talking Book, Innervisions and Songs in the Key of Life. "So that was a guy I loved," Obama said.
