Don't be fooled by the smile on Tracy Morgan's face – there's a deadly serious purpose behind all the jokes.
"If I lose my sense of humor, I'm dead, I'm gone," Morgan, 40, said during a rare serious moment in an interview for Time.
The 30 Rock actor, who's publicly struggled with alcoholism, said, he can relate to what celebrities such as Kanye West are going through.

Tracy Morgan Makes the Most of His Sobriety

Let's get one thing straight. Tracy Morgan is not Tracy Jordan, the wild and crazy character he plays on NBC's 30 Rock. In fact, the only thing they share is a love for not-so-furry pets like snakes.
"It's like going to the zoo when you come to my house," Morgan tells PEOPLE, who voices a guinea pig action hero in Disney's new action comedy G-Force. "I have snakes, three sharks, moray eels, piranhas, five scorpions and a bird spider. All of them are predators. They are dangerous but it's cool to have strong and powerful pets."
Having recently earned his first Emmy nomination, the 30 Rock star, 40, is relishing in his good fortune, especially after hitting a rough patch over the past few years.

Shark Tank Sparks Fire in Tracy Morgan's Home

30 Rock creator Tina Fey couldn't have imagined a crazier scenario: Tracy Morgan blames a faulty fish tank light for igniting a fire Wednesday morning in his Manhattan Trump Plaza apartment, but no one was hurt – not even the shark or piranha in the tank, say news reports.
"My thanks to the New York Fire Department for their quick action," Morgan, 40, said in a statement after the smoke had cleared. "Fortunately, the fire did not spread and no one in the building was hurt. Even the fish are okay."
In all, reports MSNBC, 78 firefighters from 25 units responded to the blaze, which set off sprinklers on the 16th floor of the building, where Morgan lives, as well as on other floors.
The View co-host Sherri Shepherd, who happens to live in the same building and plays the wife of Morgan character's on 30 Rock, said on The View Wednesday that her nanny called and let her know that her floor had flooded.

Tracy Morgan: Tina Fey Could Help Decide the Election

Tracy Morgan is impressed with Tina Fey's Sarah Palin impersonation – and says her skits are not only funny, but also influential.
"I think her impression of Sarah may decide who's going to be president of the United States," Morgan, who costars with Fey on 30 Rock, told reporters at a taping for VH1's Hip Hop Honors on Thursday night. "Tina Fey's Sarah Palin was on the money."
Morgan, "of course," recorded Palin's debate with Senator Joe Biden, but was crystal clear about what comes first: "Debates don't come before hip-hop," he quipped. (The VH1 Hip Hop Honors show will air on VH1 Monday, Oct. 6, and be hosted by Morgan.)
