Johnny Depp Opens Up About 'Bumpy' Breakup with Vanessa Paradis

Johnny Depp is finally opening up about his split from his partner of 14 years, Vanessa Paradis, calling the last few years of their relationship "a bit bumpy."
"At times, [it was] certainly unpleasant, but that's the nature of breakups, I guess, especially when there are kiddies involved,” Depp, 50, tells Rolling Stone in its July 4 issue.
But the actor, who has two kids with Paradis – Lily-Rose, 14, and Jack, 11 – says he hasn't stopped caring about Paradis.
"It doesn't stop the fact that you care for that person, and they're the mother of your kids," he says of their split. "You'll always know each other, and you're always gonna be in each other's lives because of those kids. You might as well make the best of it."

In typically cryptic fashion, Vanessa Paradis has expounded further on the disintegration of her life with Johnny Depp – saying a person can be very much in love yet still very unhappy.
"Love is the strongest and most fragile thing we have in life," the singer-actress, 39, tells Harper's Bazaar in its September issue. "Nothing is ever for sure, but when something in love doesn't work from the beginning, it's never going to work. Don't push it."

"Who said that artists should sell their soul, expose everything about themselves? … It's my duty to promote this movie, and my albums, but can you imagine what it feels like to see people making a business out of your pain."

He just announced his split from longtime love Vanessa Paradis, but Johnny Depp has been maintaining a bachelor's lifestyle for a while.
Since the actor, 49, and Paradis, 39, began leading separate lives more than a year ago – both reside primarily in L.A. but haven't necessarily stayed under the same roof for some time – Depp has been regularly partying with rocker Marilyn Manson, spending late nights at the singer's Hollywood-area home and even jamming on guitar at an April Manson concert.
Depp has also been busy with work, shooting Disney's mega-budget The Lone Ranger in Albuquerque, N.M., and Creede, Colo. But he's shown little interest in socializing off-set: When he's not filming, Depp routinely commutes back to L.A. by private plane, sometimes several times a week. The couple's children, Lily-Rose, 13, and Jack, 9, are enrolled in school in Los Angeles.

Johnny Depp and his longtime partner Vanessa Paradis didn't take their separation lightly and tried valiantly to keep their family together, a source tells PEOPLE.
"They've tried for months to save the relationship," the source close to the couple says, "but have known for weeks that it couldn't be saved."
Last week, Paradis arrived in France where she is promoting her film Je Me Suis Fait Tout Petit at the Cabourg Festival of Romantic Cinema.
The source says the timing of the couple's separation announcement purposefully coincided with Paradis's trip to France. "It was all decided before she got on that plane."

Four months after PEOPLE reported that Johnny Depp and Vanessa Paradis's relationship was all but finished, Depp on Wednesday denied that he and his partner of 14 years had split.
"The rumors are not true. They are absolutely not true," the actor, 48, said on the red carpet for the London premiere of Dark Shadows, according to U.K.'s Sun.
Still, conspicuously absent from the premiere was Paradis, who has not been seen publicly with Depp since reports about trouble between them. She also has not shared a red carpet with him in at least a year and a half.

In the days since PEOPLE reported that Johnny Depp and Vanessa Paradis's 14-year relationship is all but finished, the actress has been spotted solo, even hitting the red carpet alone at the premiere of her new film Café de Flore.
She kept mum at her movie premiere, but on Tuesday, French TV panelist Arianne Massenet asked Paradis, 39, the million-dollar question on Le Grand Journal.
"The press is going on about this separation with Johnny Depp ... How do you handle these rumors?" asked Massenet [PEOPLE's French correspondent translated the interview].

Vanessa Paradis attended the Paris premiere of her new film, Café de Flore, on Monday, marking her first official public appearance since PEOPLE's report that she and longtime partner Johnny Depp are living separate lives.
The actress, 39, breezed past photographers on the red carpet, pausing only once to pose with Marin Gerrier – the young actor who plays her son in the movie – and the film's director, Jean-Marc Vallée.
"She had the air she always does – polite, smiling saying hello to everyone inside," says French TV reporter Christophe Beaugrand. But reporters were explicitly told that no personal questions were allowed.

French actress-singer Paradis, 39, has spent the last few days in Paris, where on Friday she shopped in the Marais district and went for a fitting at Chanel's headquarters on Rue Cambon.
While Paradis is expected at Monday's Paris premiere of her film Café de Flore, Depp, 48, has been keeping a low profile in Los Angeles. He was spotted sporting a fedora and driving a luxury sports car Thursday, and he showed up later that night at the Hollywood Museum, according to sources.
